Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes

Where Caught: We live in a rural area, on about 23 acres of wetland, pasture and woods, bordered by a river. Our dogs hunt and run free most of the time, and it is a strong possibility that it was contracted from the property. I also used a HUGE amount of mulch in landscaping, which all of our dogs played in.

Symptoms: Fever, Respiratory infection, gray lesion (kind of slimy) on her back that would not heal, weight loss, loss of appetite.

Treatment: Treated at home as a resp. infection for 2 wks. with broad-spectrum antibiotics, no help. Was diagnosed with Blasto by vet, started Itraconazole 150 mg, given with tbsp. margarine, also small amt. of Prednisone as needed for breathing. Treated lesions with antifungal cream.
Fed Ensure Plus, peanut butter, canned food, any calories. Itraconazole treatment lasted approx. 6 mos.

Cost of Treatment: Vet visits with heartworm and blasto testing $117. Cost of meds approx. $400.

Additional Comments: Dirtbike has regained all of her weight and more, is now clear of Blasto. We're always watching for relapse. We were lucky to have a good vet and a quick diagnosis. Many don't make it because their vets don't consider Blasto. Don't let it go untreated; ask questions, and don't forget that YOU are paying THEM.
