Emma

Species: Dog

Sex: Female

Age: 8

Year: 2008

Country: U.S.A.

Locality: Madison, Wisconsin

Survived?: Yes

Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes

Where Caught: Three Lakes area, northern Wisconsin. We spend quite a bit of time up there, by a lake and in the surrounding wooded areas, including the Nicolet National Forest.

Symptoms: Emma was suddenly listless, had trouble walking, and refused to eat or drink. The next day she started a cough. No skin lesion. Very large lymph nodes. On the second day of symptoms I took her to the Eagle River Vet Hospital. The technician I saw just after I walked in immediately suspected blasto. The vet could not identify spores or yeast cells, but all symptoms pointed to blasto. Lung x-rays showed the typical beginnings of congestion.

Treatment: Started fluconazole on the second day of symptoms appearing. Aspirin for fever, and an antibiotic in case it's something else.

Cost of Treatment: So far, $289, but will need more meds.
