Phoster

Species: Dog

Sex: Male

Age: 5

Year: 2008

Country: U.S.A.

Locality: Minnesota

Survived?: Yes

Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes

Where Caught: Phoster spends a lot of time at my parent's home on Oak Island, MN (Lake of the Woods). I believe he contracted it there. His permanent home is Minneapolis but I don't think he caught it here.

Symptoms: Lethargy, lack of appetitie, coughing. He actually coughed up a small speck of blood on our visit to the vet and that's when we decided immediately to test him for Blasto. I feel blessed that my vet knew about Blasto and it's connection to the region Phoster visits often.

Treatment: 150 Mg Itraconazole per day for 4 months. His treatment only started 10 days ago and he's doing very well. He's actually eating his dry food again as opposed to canned food, hamburger and rice, whatever we could get him to eat!

Cost of Treatment: $365 per month but I'm looking at alternative sources for cheaper medication. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Additional Comments: I am so thankful for the information on this site. I believe we caught Phoster's infection early and I'm hopeful he will have a full recovery. We have two other dogs (another golden and a yellow lab) who are healthy and have no signs of the infection. However, we will vigilantly be watching them from this point forward.
