Marge

Species: Dog

Sex: Female

Age: 2

Year: 2007

Country: U.S.A.

Locality: Montgomery, IL (suburb of Chicago)

Survived?: Yes

Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes

Where Caught: We are not exactly positive where or how she got it because Marge doesnt leave the yard so it has to be here around our home.

Symptoms: First symptoms were lameness on front and rear legs. Marge didnt have a cough at first but she did tire very easily. She also had a very large lump on her rear leg that came so fast. There were a few lesions on her back and her tail. We found out that she did have extreme lung involvement and once treatment started it spread to her eye and she is now blind in that eye.

Treatment: We started off on itraconozole capsules 300mg 2x daily and then we did one treatment of ampercerin (sp?) b. After the one treatment of amp b Marge's state declined rapidly and she almost passed. We stopped treatment for a few days to allow her systems to recoop. We then went to 300 mg itra 1x daily. Once it spread to her eye we decided to switch to fluconozole 300 mg 1x daily. After this switch I saw Marge make a total turnaround and her appetite was back and she was doing better. We were giving Marge sub q fluids at home everyday due to her dehydration. We were also treating Marge's eye with three different meds... prednisone drops, trusopt drops, and an antibiotic drop which I cant remember the name of.

Cost of Treatment: Marge is now blasto free and we are thinking that we have spent nearly $8500 on treatment. I do think that this was due to a lot of unecessary testing to find out what it was she really had.

Additional Comments: We believe that the biggest part of Marge's success was our love and emotional support. Marge was on borrowed time as we dont know exactly how long she had the blasto before she was diagnosed. She had the worst lung xrays that my vet has ever seen. She is doing wonderfully and we hope she will have a full recovery and we can have our baby Marge back.
