Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: No
Where Caught: We built a new house 2 years ago, and our property has a water rentention area with alot of vegitation. In addition, we have been landscaping, so it is unclear whether Jax got this from disturbed soil, mulch or from the areas of standing water where he occasionally drinks from.
Symptoms: He first presented with swollen ,sticky eyes, lethargy and lack of interest in food.
He was treated with Benedryl and an eye cream. Four days later he was not improving, had become more lethargic, still not eating and was urinating ALOT. I took him back to the vet and thinking he had diabetes, they ran blood tests.
Treatment: The blood tests revealed that Jax wasn't diabetic, but rather he was anemic and had a WBC count that was off the charts. They then ordered xrays which revealed the cloudy appearance of his lungs. The differential is lung cancer vs. blasto. They decided to treat as if he had blasto and sent a urine sample away for a titer. They gave me Itraconizole 150 mg as well as an baytril to treat possible underlying UTI (he had hematuria).
Cost of Treatment: The two vet visits, blood tests, xrays, urine tests and ten days worth of meds has cost $800.00.
Additional Comments: We will find out some time this week whether the titer comes back positive for blastomycosis. Although these tests are known not to be 100% reliable, a negative result will lead us to the diagnosis of lung cancer and Jax will be put down. Not sure what to do if it is positive, if Jax doesn't go into serious distress, we will treat (I am so grateful for this website and the listing for affordable meds). Kind of worried about my other rottie getting sick......
