Where Caught: He must have gotten it in our yard. We have around two acres fenced in but no creeks or ponds.
Second suspect - brand new cypress mulch in the front yard.

We have lived in this house for 7 years.

Symptoms: Stopped eating - this never happened
Fever 10.7
2 days later coughing - dry throat cough
4 days later looked to be in pain
2 days later in severe pain - front leg
x-ray of lungs showed lobe infection?
Shaved leg and found puncture mark on front leg pastern
4 days later joint began swelling then burst second x-ray showed spots all over lungs, coughing had returned.
Slide test positive for blasto.

Treatment: CBC blood test - only abnormality high
bilirubi all else normal
First tried keflex but the dog couldn't tolerate it and threw it up.
Then given metronidazole because it was what we had on hand. Fever decreased but did not go away. Dog started eating.
Fever went back up started limping - treated with doxycycline thinking tick problem. Tick titers came back negative.
Next step x-ray lungs and shave leg.
Change medication to clavamox, give medicam for pain as well as tramedal. Also given sucralfate for stomach.
Fever went down, dog eating better, started using leg.
Pastern joint swelled, then burst. Sent to UT Vet clinic in Knoxville. Dog was given intervenous drugs.
He is now taking 100 mg sporanox twice a day for the next couple days. Then he will get one pill once a day.

Cost of Treatment: total unknown - cost for UT estimated at $3000.
The cost for a two day stay, IV antifungal and 45 sporanox pills was $1900.

Additional Comments: Treatment is ongoing, he has survived the night and is doing good so far. Will update with conclusion.
Day 3 and he still has a fever but he is doing okay. He is eating and drinking.
