Year: 2010

Country: U.S.A.

Locality: Glenview, IL

Survived?: Yes

Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes

Where Caught: I am uncertain for sure how I caught Blasto, but I do spend a bit of time on weekends in the wood in Chicago's NW suburbs.

Symptoms: Initially, it was fever, chills, and cough. The fever and chills went away after a few days, but the productive cough continued. Eventually, I did have some weight loss and night sweats.

Treatment: Itraconazole for 6 months to a year.

Cost of Treatment: The cost of diagnosis will be around $50,000 of which I will pay $4500 with insurance.

The cost of treatment is around $10 per month for my cost for Itraconazole with insurance.

Additional Comments: Diagnosis seemed to take a long time. A soft tissue mass was discovered on my lungs via X-Ray on 12/24. Over the next month I had blood tests, urine tests, 2 CT scans, 4 X-rays, 1 PET scan, 2 bronchoscopies, 1 mediastinoscopy, and finally 1 thoracoscopy. I guess it can be tough to get a positive on the fungus and the location of the fungus on my lungs was in a tough spot. This mass had the and look and behavior of cancer.
