Locality: Whitewater, Wisconsin USA
Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes
Where Caught: I have a feeling Koala got blast from when I took his for walks. I always took all three dogs but Koala is the only one who has Blasto. We use to walk down the road to the country where it is wooded and near a stream of water. I use to let them smell near the banks and by the old dead brush. Now I am afraid to go near there and haven't been since. I am sure they miss it.
Symptoms: It started with his toe stuck out funny and I thought it was broken. I took him to the vet and they ex rayed and could not find anything wrong. (DEC'07) A month later he had some swelling on his right paw and a few sores on his lower leg. Took him to the vet and they gave me antibiotics. (JAN '07) That didn't help. Then I noticed he had a pink spot on his tongue. The only way I could tell this is because he has an all black tongue being 1/2 Chow and 1/2 Akita. Such a beautful dog with a kind, gentle nature. Took his back to the vet cause his lesions were getting bigger. He was also panting a lot and drank a lot of water. He also had a small lump on the same leg like a small tumor about the size of a quarter. This was middle of March '08. Th e vet was concerned and he had a fever. She took samples from the tumor (lympe node) and a slide of his draining lesions and it was sent to a place in Marshfield for testing. The test came back he had Blastomycosis. Stated his on Itraconazole April 1st. He started improving the following week.
Treatment: Started Itraconazole and with in a week he was feeling better. He never did caugh at all. So he has been on 150 mgs daily. He weighs 69 pounds.
Cost of Treatment: I just ordered from CanPharm.com so the cost of the pills for 53 days was $142.00. Still waiting though... Should be here any day. Cost so far with vet bills and meds to date are $960. Here the meds cost me $12.00 daily for 1 1/2 capsules. The vet recommende he take them for 6 months.
Additional Comments: I dont believe Koala got this from breating it in cause his lungs are clear. He only ran a temperature one degree higher all through out vet appointments. He did lose 5 pounds in 4 months. And he has no other synptoms than a spot on his tongue (which has gotten smaller) and on his right leg. He seems to be happier and is more peppy and he is very playful.
