Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes
Where Caught: We live in a small community in Iowa and my husband is a crop farmer. Parker a sheltie is always with my husband, anywhere from riding in the tractor or combine to running around the farm. The farm backs up to a small mud lake, but Parker never gets close.
Symptoms: Parker would have a cough in the moring and would leave after he was up for a while. The cough eventually got worse and we took him for a long walk at a state park, he could hard time keeping up with us. Also he was not the vibrant dog he had always been, rushing to be by my husband as he went out the door.
Treatment: We took him to our local vet and he gave Parker some antibiotics, he got somewhat better but did not lose his 104 temp. We took him to the College of Veterinary Medicine in Ames IA. There he went through tests and was determined that it was Blastomycosis. They did a scan and a needle biospy. He is now on prednisone and Sporanox.
Cost of Treatment: Between the local vet and Ames the bills have amount so far of 2500 plus. Parker started treatment the first part of July so there will be more cost for med's, continuing Vet visits etcs.
Additional Comments: When I saw the exray from our vet and he was unsure, I am so happy that we pursue it further. Parker has brought so much unconditionally love to both of us. We are in hopes that the medication does it work, from what I am reading it is scary what he could go through yet. He is eating everything in site and has become somewhat hyperactive.
