Where Caught: Willie is our foster golden retriever. His previous family lived on the Wolf River in northern Wisconsin. They had an 11yr old golden that died of blast 2 years earlier. When they saw the symptoms in Willie, they immediately took him to the vet. Mira Vista test resulted in a 10.66. They surrendered him to our rescue organization, because if he got cured they did want him to get sick again, since they knew it was on their land. It was such a selfless act of love for Willie. It was heartbreaking when we picked him up. His parents were just sobbing. I had blasto myself and knew that I had to foster him. I felt a kinship to him.

Symptoms: They said that he started coughing and his eye was oozing stuff and he wasn't eating well. They knew what to look for and immediately took him to the vet.

Treatment: Willie was put on Fluconazole 200mg three times a day. This started June 22, 2011.

Additional Comments: Since Willie has come to us at the end of August, 2011. He has lost 10lbs. He is now eating like a horse and continuing to lose weight. My vet has never dealt with blasto so I am taking him to an internist in Madison, who has dealt with this a lot. She feels that the weight loss might be something other than the blasto. She feels he might have a GI disorder. We have run bloodwork, a bile acids test which his levels being low. She said that either low or high levels can indicate gi disease. He is going on the 13th for and endoscopy and taking biopsies from the stomach, intestines and possibly the colon. He also had an ultra sound done and a chest xray. The chest xray shows that the blasto is diminishing. His last Mira Vista test came back as 0.42. The vet feels that the blasto did not cause the gi problems. Has anyone else had these problems. When we neutered Willie in mid September my vet noticed a large red spot way up in his left eye, he thought this was blasto. When I took him to Madison and opthamologist said that his eyes look good now. I am wondering how often he should be having the Mira Vista test be done and how long he should be on it after a negative result? Any help would be appreciated. This is one foster that will never leave. He has stolen our hearts. He is one very special boy. Thanks.
