Species: Dog

Sex: Female

Age: 7

Year: 2010

Country: U.S.A.

Locality: Memphis, TN

Survived?: No

Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: No

Where Caught: Possibly in my own backyard where I have decaying wood. I have landscape timbers at the base of my privacy fence. A few of them are rotting.

Symptoms: Cough x 2 weeks, decreased appetite x 5 days. Quit eating food, only eats the best of the best treats or meat. Turns nose up at things she would normally scarf down. Cough was so mild and seldom (3-4 times a day) it never really worried me. When she turned down certain foods, I was convinced she was sick. CXR highly suspicious of pulmonary Blasto. Also has fever of 103.

Treatment: Fluconazole 200 mg 2 times daily
Doxycycline 150 mg daily

Cost of Treatment: So far in 2 days:
Initial vet visit with urine testing, x-ray, and meds $403

Emergency clinic visit with overnight stay $439 (included a repeat x-ray and ultrasound to r/o cardiac problems).

2nd vet visit for f/u after emergency night clinic $187 This included cost of bloodwork to help get an earlier diagnosis and check out liver function.

Additional Comments: Still waiting on urine test results.

Update-Urine test negative for blasto. Additional lab work revealed low red cells, low platelets, high white cells. Had an abdominal ultrasound to rule out tumors. None found in abdomen or chest cavity. Sadie passed on 11-22-10 after continuing to have more and more respiratory difficulties when lying down. No improvement with meds. I chose to euthanize her to keep her from suffering- highly suspecting cancer. Had a lung biopsy done after euthanizing which came back as hemangiosarcoma, a cancer that develops in the blood vessels. Know that I chose to euthanize her out of deep love. I miss her dearly and my heart is broken. Sweet sweet Sadie Lou, cancer robbed you of many years.
