Locality: Nashville, TN
Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes
Where Caught: Either the dampness of the May floods (our backyard was flooded for several days) resulted in the fungus being present, or we had a kitchen drainage issue in our crawl space leading up to diagnosis. We had complained of a 'musty' smell for several weeks prior. She had recently gone through her heat cycle (started just in time to push off her spay date), so her immune system was low. We think some combination therein led her to be susceptible to the disease.
Symptoms: General lethargy, a wheezing sound in the lungs Eventually quit eating. Lung x-rays came back with tiny dots, but nothing that would have pointed us in the blasto direction. After a battery of tests, her eye presented with acute uveitis. Glaucoma set in, and the vet sent off for blaso. Came back confirmed. Eye has not responded to treatment, will have to be removed. Appetite is fairly healthy, and lungs sound better. Have not started blasto drug therapy yet - we just received confirmed diagnosis today.
Treatment: Enucleation for the eye, unsure of drug therapy, will know more today.
Cost of Treatment: Test, emergency spay, opthamologist visit, and enucleation have us up to $1700. Unsure of drug costs at this time.
