Species: Dog

Sex: Male

Age: 10

Year: 2010

Country: U.S.A.

Locality: Oshkosh, WI

Survived?: Yes

Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes

Where Caught: Champ spends several weekends in Rhinelander,WI. We also live on Lake Winnebago have mulch but nothing new lately.

Symptoms: Cough and hacking up saliva, activty intolerance, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing with exertion. Nosebleed. CXR initially read as bacterial PNA vs Blasto vs pulmonary lymphoma. Eventually developed a fever 104 F. Louder breathing after 10 day then urine came back + for Blasto at 41 on 10/21/2010. Repeat CXR was worse involving R and some L lung involvement. Eye exam mildly abnormal.

Treatment: Started on Itraconzaole 150mg daily, increased prednisone to 10mg daily first 2 days then increased to 15 mg days 3-5. Eye Ointment started 3x/day.

Cost of Treatment: $1000 in diagnosis b/n 2 facilities had taken him to referral center for second opinion.
First 10 days I think was $100 and 1 month through compounding RX was $72

Additional Comments: I wish he was started on treatment before the urine antigen had come back and there was suspicion on the CXR. I should have asked about starting the antifungal but didn't.
