Species: Dog

Sex: Male

Age: 2

Year: 2001

Country: Canada

Locality: Kenora, Ontario

Survived?: Yes

Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes

Where Caught: Shadow is a Black Labrador Retriever. He is not a digger. We believe he inhaled the spores while we were digging a pit for a gray water tank at our family cottage in the Kenora area.

Symptoms: Cough and fever (hot tongue and nose)
X-rays showed white cloudy growths. Diagnosis confirmed with wash of lungs and testing of secretions.

Treatment: Sporanox

Cost of Treatment: Approx $3000

Additional Comments: I was aware of Blasto at the time as a result of a neighbor at the lake contracting it himself and local media reports of many dogs contracting it. I asked the vet to test him for it shortyl after symptoms presented. Treatment was successful. There was no further recurrance of the disease and Shadow enjoyed many happy years at the family cottage until his passing from hemangosarcoma in 2010.
