Species: Dog

Sex: Female

Age: 2

Year: 2006

Country: U.S.A.

Locality: Edinburgh, Indiana

Survived?: No

Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes

Where Caught: I'm not really sure, but Melly loved to dig for moles, so she always had her nose in the dirt. We do have a pond and a creek nearby.

Symptoms: It started with a little cough, not the hacking cough that others have described, just an occasional cough. She started limping on her right hind leg a few days after we noticed the cough. She got the skin lesions and her eyes became affected after she was under treatment at the vet. This all happened within about 5 days. Her chest x-rays were clear, so diagnosis was made from the skin lessions.

Treatment: Melly was kept at the vets office for a week. They gave her Itraconazole, vitamin B 12, pain medication and eye drops. We had her home with us on the last day, and she got so much worse, that we decided to end her suffering.

Cost of Treatment: Approximately $500.00. It would have been a lot more, but the vet didn't charge us for hospitalization.

Additional Comments: When Melly was diagnosed with Blasto, there were not so many people on this board, and almost all the cases had the same sad ending as ours. I'm glad to see all the dogs that are beating this. I'm always amazed to read stories of dogs who were not diagnosed for weeks or months, and still managed to survive. It has been a year and a half since we let Melly go, and I still miss her terribly.
