Wallace

Species: Dog

Sex: Male

Age: 4

Year: 2004 year of first symptoms

Country: Canada

Locality: Winnipeg, Manitoba

Survived?: No

Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes

Where Caught: The first time he contracted this disease in 2004, we had a cottage at Victoria Beach. Wallace was gravely sick for about one year. We thought he was cured but then the disease came back and attacked his eye. His eye had to be removed. He was put on intraconazole again for about 3 months. He was great, in great shape for the next five years. We were so grateful he survived and appreciated him every single day. About 1 1/2 weeks ago his existing eye started leaking a greenish discharge. We took him in first thing the very next morning. Blastomycosis was again suspected. We were devastated. NO IDEA WHERE HE CONTRACTED IT THE 3rd TIME.

Symptoms: 1st time; coughing, sores, difficulty breathing, loss of appetite, vomiting, lethargy, very very sick
2nd time; attacked his eye, detached retina, eye removal necessary
3rd time; greenish eye discharge, eye hemmorage, vomiting, lethargy, difficulty breathing, legs collapsing, suspected eye, brain involvement.

Treatment: Intraconazole (Sporonax)
2- 100MG 2 TIMES A DAY FOR THE FIST WEEK.
2- 100MG ONCE A DAY FOLLOWING

XRAYS, SWABS, TRACHEA WASH...EYE SWAB,
eye drops, anitbiotics, urine test

Cost of Treatment: in total approx. 8 thousand dollars.

Additional Comments: Wallace died one week ago,Sept. 4th, 2010 after 5 years of being cured of blastomycosis, the disease came back. He was 12 years old We believe it attacked his brain and one remaining eye. We are not sure if it remained in his system all this time with his immune system keeping it at bay or if he inhaled the spores recently. Sadly we had to make the decision to euthanize Wallace. It was the worst day of our lives. We will always miss you Wallace. We love you. We are sorry you had to suffer. We will not be the same without you in our lives. Thank you for all you gave us.
