Species: Dog

Sex: Male

Age: 8

Year: 1998

Country: Canada

Locality: TORONTO

Survived?: Yes

Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes

Where Caught: GEORGIAN BAY, ONTARIO ALSO KNOWN AS FRYING PAN ISLAND. CONTRACTED WHEN HE FELL AND BROKE A TOOTH ON SOIL OR BY SWIMMING WHERE BEAVERS FREQUENT

Symptoms: PAIN IN THE BACK OF THE NECK. EVENTUALLY UNABLE TO BEND HIS CHIN TO HIS CHEST.

Treatment: UNDERWENT SURGERY TO CLEAN UP C3 & C4 IN THE NECK WHERE THE DISEASE ATE AWAY AT THE BONES. AMPHITERICIN(SP) B FOR APPROX. 2WKS THEN KIDNEYS SHUT DOWN FROM SIDE EFFECTS OF MEDICINE. NEXT WAS A 6MONTH COURSE OF ITRACONAZOLE. SPENT 30 DAYS IN SICK KIDS HOSPITAL IN TORONTO(THE BEST IN THE WORLD). AFTER 6MTHS OF TREATMENT WAS THEN DIAGNOSED WITH PNUEMONIA(SP) WHICH WAS ACTUALLY BLASTO MASKING ITSELF THE WAY IT USUALLY DOES. ANOTHER 6MTHS OF MEDS

Cost of Treatment: $7200 IN DRUGS FOR ONE YEAR. LUCKILY WE DID NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR HOSPITAL STAY OR OPERATION, PHYSIO THERAPY.

Additional Comments: THIS IS A DIFFICULT DISEASE TO DIAGNOSE AND ALOT OF PEOPLE IN NORTHERN ONTARIO ARE AWARE OF IT BUT WILL NOT DISCUSS IT BECAUSE OF THEIR LAND/COTTAGE VALUE BEING WORTHLESS WITH THIS DISEASE ON IT. THERE NEEDS TO BE MORE EDUCATION AND THIS SHOULD ALSO BE A REPORTABLE DISEASE JUST LIKE AIDS OR ANY OTHER INFECTIOUS DISEASE
