Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes
Where Caught: We think maybe by the creek where we would take him to run. Of course, we had never heard of this so we don't know if it was the non treated mulch we have close to his area.
Symptoms: Loss of 8 pounds in on week - loss of appetite, fever of 103 and now holding at 104, coughing in the throat and now seems deeper - with labored breathing.
Both eyes have started to have drainage. Back leg is now swollen from joint to paw - about 1.5 times the normal size.
Treatment: itraconazole 175mg
Cost of Treatment: 14 pills to begin @ 36.00.
Spent 700.00 at the vets office to get to the diagnosis.
Additional Comments: We took our healthy large breed 2.5 year old dog in to have him fixed. He came home tired but still hungry and acting normal. Three days later he started to have a cough...and a 102.5 fever. We thought an infection from the surgery or due to his age he just didn't bounce back quickly.
The vet told us maybe he had liver shunts - he was put on an antibotic - and we saw no improvement in three days. We took his temp the 4th morning and found 104 temp and then we went to the vet and they did the x-rays and found a swollen lymph node - and it was confirmed by the microscopic slide.
This is less than two weeks - and we are in the process now of making the decision to put him down and where we will bury him. A beautiful spirited dog lost to this unknown horrible illness.
