Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes
Where Caught: We have a cabin in northern Wisconsin. There are three man made ponds there.
The only confirmation of Bandit having Blasto was x-rays. So were really not sure if it was Blasto or not. If he would have contracted Blasto, it showed no symptoms for over 3 months.
Symptoms: weight loss, swollen lymph nodes, coughing, poor appetite, fever, depression, very labored breathing and not wanting to play or exercise any longer. No sores and no involvement of his eyes.
Treatment: Was on 200mg of Itraconazole per day. Bandit weighs about 80lb.
Cost of Treatment: First prescription filled at local Walmart, $200.00 for 28 pills, a two week supply. Now ordered from Canada and it is $200.00 for 120 pills, a two month supply.
Additional Comments: We noticed a change almost immediately in Bandit. He started eating, his fever was gone and the labored breathing was to a minimum. But, now a month after starting treatment, the breathing has gotten much worse again. Took him to the vet and did new x-rays and they were much, much worse. Bandit couldn't hardly breath any longer and was very, very weak and anemic. His liver was more than twice the size it was supposed to be. Miss him dreadfully.
