Age: 53

Year: 2007

Country: U.S.A.

Locality: Birmingham, Alabama

Survived?: Yes

Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes

Where Caught: I do not know!

Symptoms: Flu like symptoms initially. Coughing, weight loss, tireness, loss of appetite.

Treatment: Amphtericin B IV 2weeks, then itraconazole 1 year.

Cost of Treatment: $750 per month without insurance.

Additional Comments: I almost died before being diagnosed. I was first said to have asthma, and given the normal meds. for that. Then sarcoidosis and given steroids and cancer drug for that. I went to the ER having trouble breathing and was admitted with pneumonia. Overall after having had 3 brontoscopes, many chest xrays and finally diagnosed after open lung biopsy. I started the amphtericin B IV for 2 weeks, I was on a breathing machine for 1 week, (amphtericin is toxic) and near kidney failure, in the hospital for 30 days. And by the grace of God I'm hear to tell the story. I had never heard of this disease and I have no idea how I got it.
