Romeo

Species: Dog

Sex: Male

Age: 1

Year: 8/18/09

Country: U.S.A.

Locality: Arkansas

Survived?: No

Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes

Where Caught: Had to be in our yard. It's the only place he ever went. He has a littermate and his mother and father that run in the same yard. Never even heard of this before now.

Symptoms: Choking on his dry dog food, no energy, lameness, fever, depression, weight loss

Treatment: First treated with antiobiotics, then with Intraconazole for 2 days before he passed away.

Cost of Treatment: $400.00 in vet bills and $100.00 in medication

Additional Comments: Did alot of testing in the first vet visit but was thought to only have a bacterial infection. A week later he was blind and they did different testing on his swollen lymph nodes and found out he had Blastomyosis. Started medicine that night. Romeo kept his appetite the whole time. I just started feeding him soft food instead of his dry dog food. Except on the last day he had started the rapid breathing he would chew the food but it would just fall out of his mouth. The vet recommended a pain medication for him. 2 hrs after taking the pain medication he was laying down and my husband was talking to him. Romeo tried to lift his head into my husband's hands but he seized up and just passed away that fast. I'm thinking his little heart just gave out on him. He tried so hard and I wanted to give him the chance since he was so young. We will miss his gentle soul. Found out exactly what it was on 8/25/09 he died 8/27/09 the day before his 1st birthday.
