Casey

Species: Dog

Sex: Female

Age: 1

Year: 2009

Country: U.S.A.

Locality: Streator, IL

Survived?: No

Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes

Where Caught: we have a creek 1/4 mile back from our house...last fall was the 1st time we had trouble with beaver's....Casey and Bailey did go and play in the creek... we think this is where it came from...not for sure as there was so much rain we had a bit of flooding in our yard as well.

Symptoms: Casey's 1st symptom was her eye looked really funny, we took her to the vet many times with different diagnoisis...until finally blasto was confirmed....by that point it was too late

Treatment: we gave her 1 Itraconazole and she went right down hill... I forced the 2nd dose down her throat before we went to bed and woke up with her dead on the kitchen floor.

Cost of Treatment: between the misdiagnosis, wrong medication and finally the correct medication it was around $1,000

Additional Comments: I think it's very important to explain Blastomycosis to the owners in great detail explaining it will get worse before it gets better. I believe the Itraconazole should never be given without anti-nausea medication and that these dogs should be in the vet hospital with oxygen and an IV ready to help them...the reason I know this is we have just had our 2nd dog diagnosed and that is where he is now.
