Where Caught: My neighbors property that ajoins ours. There is stagnet water that lays in this little part of this property. I notice it everytime I cut the yard.

Symptoms: My husband first noticed that my dogs eyes looked different. They had a cloudy look to them. The second symptom we noticed was a very small hole in his skin on this back.

Treatment: The first vet. treated it as a hot spot. Gave us some medicine to put on it. Then when he kept getting more, he gave him an antibiotic and did a culture. Eventually did a culture and did a chest x-ray. Kept telling us that it was nothing serious. After six months and my dog getting worse, we took him to another vet. He took one look at the x-ray and he said that if it was his dog he would have him put to sleep. My dog had draining lesions ALL OVER his body. His lungs had spots all over. He was having a very hard time moving at all. The vet told me that my dog had to be in alot of pain. Maybe if I had switched vets sooner, I would still have my dog.

Cost of Treatment: At the time I had him put to sleep, I had already spent a little over $1,000.00. I would of spent more, if I knew it would of saved him and he would not have to suffer.

Additional Comments: I wish I would of known when he originally got this. He was a sheltie and with all the hair, I'm surprised I ever found the lesion in the first place. It has been 13 months since I had him put to sleep and I still miss him as much now as I did then. I don't think I can bring myself to get another dog. I'm afraid that if my dog did get it from the water that lays on my neighbors ajoining property, a new dog may also get this. I don't think I can watch another dog go through this.
