Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes

Where Caught: Three cases at the exact same time I had mine. I think I got it from our woods. I had been digging around in an area of dead wood and damp soil. Also burned rotted wood.

Symptoms: Severe cough, weakness, pain in back left side - intense, night sweats. First symptom was July 3rd, lack of appetite. In one week was in hospital with what they thought was severe pneumonia. Within two days in ICU, then transferred to United Hospital in St. Paul. Next day put on ventilator with ARDS. Said I was their miracle case. Was not expected to survive. In ICU for 28 days. In hospital for 6 weeks.

Treatment: Amphotericin-B, double doses, double the time, the sporanox for next year.

Cost of Treatment: Don't know. Sporanox was $100 per week out of our pocket. Insurance covered the hospital bill after we met all our co-pays and deductibles, and I have never gotten a bill. I believe somewhere around $500,000 most likely.

Additional Comments: Every time I have a cough, I wonder if I am getting it back. I just went off the meds a week ago. I went into the hospital on July 10, 2008, so I just had my year anniversary.
