Species: Dog

Sex: Female

Age: 2

Year: 2007

Country: U.S.A.

Locality: Chicago, IL

Survived?: Yes

Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes

Where Caught: Farm pond outside of Danville, IL, where we have family.

Symptoms: hard lumps all over
lame front right leg
lame back left leg
eventually led to difficulty breathing

Treatment: Consulted with Dr. Legendre a professor/vet at the University Tennessee who has won awards for his work with Blasto. He insisted itraconazole in the sporonax format (looks like little white beads inside the capsules - NOT powder format) was the best course of treatment. Gave Annie a loading dose (I think it was 100mg, but I'm not certain anymore) of itraconozole for four days, then dropped back to her normal dose, which is 35 mg (she weighs about 16 pounds). Also gave her a small amount of steriods for a short period of time to help her breathing.

Cost of Treatment: Her hospitalization and critical days cost a total of $3500.00. Still taking her back for rechecks and giving her meds, but we haven't added that into the total.

Additional Comments: We are six months from her initial diagnosis and Annie thriving. Has tons of energy. We will be continuing meds for another three months.
