Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes
Where Caught: As Ish, and our other dogs are limited to the house, garage and their pen, we are not sure where this came from. He has, on occassion, gotten out of the pen and gone for a run - always swimming in swamps when he does - it might have been that. We do not know.
Symptoms: Ish started with what appeared to be an eye infection. We did a week of treatment on the eye until it cleared enough that they could get a good look inside. When they did, they saw Blasto. They did chest exrays and it appears his lungs are full. He has NO cough or lessions - no other signs. We got the diagnosis on Friday and over the weekend he has deteriorated - little interest in food, a limp, staggering. He has lost sight in the eye and is banging into walls and furniture. He can't make it down the stairs by himself, he is so unsteady.
Treatment: The vet prescibed fluconazole - 4 100mg tablets a day for possible they next 6 months. I went to get the prescription - 120 tablets is $742.77 -which works out to about $25/day. We are looking for alternatives as I cannot possible afford this.
Cost of Treatment: Over $1000 at the vet prior to diagnosis - medication costs of somewhere between 1.49/tablet to $6.10/tablet, with the possibility of up to 4 tablets a day.
Additional Comments: I have 2 other dogs that are limited to the same area and 3 adult cats and currently 5 'new' 7 week old kittens in the house - I am so worried.
