Sex: Male

Age: 71

Year: 2008

Country: U.S.A.

Locality: Springfield, Mo

Survived?: Yes

Medical Diagnosis of Blastomycosis?: Yes

Where Caught: Unknown. Could be gardening; we had an extremely wet growing season, could be a river bank where he dug for worms; he's a very active guy so it could be anything.

Symptoms: Started out with a cough, then low-grade fever with malaise, weakness, weight loss, shortness of breath.

Treatment: After 3 wks he saw family doctor who diagnosed pneumonia, prescribing antibiotics & an inhaler. This didn't do it so he prescribed a more high-powered med along with a nebulizer which he used every 6 hrs around the clock. Things didn't completely resolve so a CT scan was ordered which showed significant infiltrates. This got him sent to a pulmonologist who did a bronchoscopy to rule out non-hodgkins lymphoma. He then was scheduled for a PET scan but before that app't the cultures started showing yeast, then the diagnosis. Now he's seeing an infectious disease dr & a dermatologist. He has a nasty-looking sore on his upper arm that's been biopsied but report is not in yet.

Cost of Treatment: Unknown. He's on Medicare.
