I know, right?  I was shocked to realize how prevalent this is (especially for such a 'rare' disease) and find out that they've just started working on a vaccine.  Seems like someone could do a lot of good if they could just figure that out!

Oh, I agree. I think it is way more prevalent than most people (and vets) think. It's so hard to diagnose, who knows how many people lose their pets to this and never know why! But if they can come up with meds for heartworm, I gotta think they can figure this one out too.

Not to mention how many may exhibit symptoms, but never seek a diagnosis, or choose not to test or treat because of the costs!!!  I've had a lot of people interested in Izzy through work and social friends....I know bennie's mom started something on facebook I have to get linked up to.  Crossing my fingers for those amazing researchers fighting hard so that no one has to lose another dog to blasto!

Does the CDC even track cases?  If it is becoming more prevalent in dogs, it's a matter of time before it becomes more prevalent in humans.  I hate to think our dogs are paying the price just to get someone to listen.

The board of 'blastomycosis in the news' tracks a lot of media.  I think the CDC only tracks multiple confirmed diagnoses - then they can say an area is a 'hot spot.' I don't know if it extends to animals though.  Wilson3, jigga's mom, and the other 'blasto guardians' are probably more up to speed.

The CDC website, looks like it was reviewed in 08 and updated in July of 2010:

I think a lot of dogs have died in our area totally undiagnosed. The vet that was in the area for a while tried to get some time on our little radio station to inform people about blasto, but for some reason it was not allowed.

My guess is that given the summer tourist industry at LOW, they didn't want word out alot, scaring away $.  I get it, that's food on the table for a number of people up there; we go to Sioux Narrows every summer, which is where Curby picked this up - beaver dam.  THe guys there warned us about it, but we didn't realize what it was, so let the dogs run in it.

I think general awareness of blasto, so vets consider it, is agreat idea - good job on the Facebook page!

Our Jack Russell that weighs about 20 pounds is on 50 mg fluconazole twice daily.
Hope that helps.  Sending positive thoughts your way.
