Bennnie so far
« on: November 10, 2010, 11:39:42 AM »

He isn't thrilled about food, but right this second he's up and drinking from his very favorite fountain....he went outside to look at the woods... watch the folks dogwalking .( hate to see them there.. I want to warn them.. the blasto is in these woods by this stream. we got it here) anyway, so far he's tolerating this fairly well...... hard to get food in... but right before dose time, in the evening, there is a window, so far, when he will eat a little. the first two days he had a great appetite, evenings. Greyhounds are finicky anyway, but now that would be an understatement.....We sent off a test to Mira Vista, for a base line...( the biopsy was pretty conclusive) did a blood workup, too, and did check his kidney health with a blood test and urine test on the spot. so we know we can switch to fluco.... going to use up the Itra and switch..... I'm sorry, if you disagree, but this is a sighthound, the enemy isn't in his lungs, and I worry about the eyes... He is cold nose bright eyes this morning.. tired and sleeping and staying as close as possible to me.....

This is all so hard, watching our pets hurt so much, decisions about care and next steps.  This board really is a lifesaver for information and support.  I'd think with Bennie, the eating is even more crucial.  A friend does greyhound rescue (has three herself), and they don't have much padding!
Good to hear he's not having the respiratory distress so far.  Go Bennie!!

Thank you. It IS hard. Second guessing every decision, and trying to know things that are really unknowable. like the future....... Thanks everyone for thinking of everyone else, when your own trouble is huge, with this........Bennie has been mine since he t=retired from the track at 5.. He was a little chubby in the spring, and now his weight is ideal. which is not ideal for dealing with this. I wish he was fat... but before we got full bore into the treatment, he ate a ton of beef and chicken and other amazing good stuff, so his weight actually went up at first. now he has issues with food, with even looking at food..... That's hard.

we're on fluconazole as well.  we feel good about the decision, but when there are a few treatment options, and all of them are good, but they all are effective for different reasons, it's hard to know the best thing to do.  Keep working with your vet, and take advantage of the MASSIVE experience we've been lucky enough to find on this board.  There are a lot of great success stories on here from pups that were on fluconazole....
