Comet is GREAT
« on: October 11, 2007, 02:53:18 PM »

We brought Comet home from the hospital two days ago.  He was woozy from the surgery and all the pain killers that day and part of the next.  Then, WHAM!  He is bringing me the ball, begging to go outside, wanting to go in the truck, even went for a nice long walk with me this afternoon!  He eats like no tomorrow, and I feed him three meals a day!  He even finished his brother's food!  Right now he is sacked out by my feet, taking an afternoon snooze.  He drinks well.  Bathroom habits are good.  I am so proud of him, and absolutely elated that we have our boy to love on and he is not in pain.  His right eye, well where it used to be, is bruised and sore looking, but he is not overly sensitive about it.  He wears an ecollar when he is outside or when I am not with him to protect it -- mostly from his brother who has resumed wanting to play now that he senses things are getting back to "normal".  Comet is NOT eating regular dog food yet.  I slip a cup or two in each day, but he is getting 1 can of food in the morning, grilled chicken, brown rice, and broth for lunch, and london broil, brown rice, broth, and 1 c Canidae dog food at night.  I am so very very greatful that, for right now, we could not be doing better.  He does not appear to have a fever, and he rests comfortably.  He has resumed some of his dominant habits which tells me he's taking pack lead back from his brother, which is a good sign.  I want these good things for every single dog on this site.  It is so gut wrenching to read the stories and sense the fear and the pain -- just as you all have been doing for us.

We are very very very lucky, and I know this.  We don't have the results back from the U of Wisconsin yet regarding the strange mass behind his bad right eye, but we are living one day at a time right now.  And today could not be better.  His left eye sees fantastic, and he has adjusted beautifully.  Of course, he's not had vision in that right eye for 10 days or so, so he adjusted to his loss much faster than we did.

He is not a candidate for a prosthesis as the fungus can hide behind it.  So his beautiful brown eye is closed forever.  It hurts to write this, but it passes quickly because I have the entire rest of his body to love on.  And he can see.  He is lying next to me breathing comfortably, and there is nothing that could make me happier, and it is something i am waiting to read from every single person on this board fighting this awful crap.

Yeah Comet! I am sooooo happy to hear that he is doing well and you are enjoying every single minute with him. I know Marge still has some trouble adjusting to her blind eye. She doesn't like it when Homer approaches her blind side and scares her. I feel so bad when she hits her head on things. Poor babies. I know it is hard with the what he went through but always tell yourself that he is such a tough guy and really loves you and you DO have the rest of him to love!
