Hi FOlks,

Mika continues to be a little crazy girl even though her Mira Vista reading was over 76!!  She's back on itra and tolerating that well.

Haven't looked at all new entries since I returned from family reunion, but I see lots of new cases in the topic headlines.  My vet thinks that blasto comes forth with a vengeance in cold weather, observing that Jan and Feb here are his heaviest months! (He thinks they get it in autumn mostly but it flares in cold weather).   Thought I would share that theory.

PLEASE VOTE FOR OUR ANIMAL SHELTER.  We work so hard and really serve this community, helping people unable to feed their animals , having a special fund for folks who can't afford vet care, a fund for spay/neuter, a feral cat spay/neuter program to reduce the tragic cases of feral cats loose in our horrible cold.  Our shelter is not strictly no kill as we will euthanize in cases of unfixable medical problems or extreme dangerous behavior (we have an animal behaviorist who works with us to see if we can correct the behavior first and usually do so).  We keep an animal as long as is needed.  Angel, a cat, had been with us for 10 years and she was adopted last month! All but three workers are volunteers.  But the NEED is SO GREAT.  The Animal Rescue site has a website where you can vote for Northwoods Humane Society, Hayward, WI.  You can vote as often as you wish.  Here's the link: http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/clickToGive/shelterchallenge.faces?siteID=3

(I don't know why that didn't produce a hyperlink but it didn't.  If anyone knows how I can copy the website address onto this forum, or how to turn the address above into a hyperlink, let me know.)

I like your vet's cold weather idea.  My dog came down with blasto in January too, while living in Michigan's Upper peninsula.  Not much outside but feet of snow.  So he had to have been exposed prior and the incubation popped in January.

I wonder if this site's database could be mined for "date of occurrence"?

Hi Kristin,

Yes, keep voting.  Unfortunately, our little shelter is not doing well in ths competition but we're hanging in there and hoping we can get the votes!  This kind of competition is difficult for smaller shelters.

Yesterday we adopted out a huge rottX dog who had been with us for months and months.  Boone's new family is really good and knows how to work with him in a positive, constructive manner.  Wonderful!  We were thrilled.  We also accepted a new dog into the shelter (we're always full so when one goes out, another comes in!).  Her family raised her from a pup but can't afford to keep her even when we offered to pay vet expenses (infected ear) and help with food.  They were in tears but social security doesn't go far and that's all they have.  They said Lady was a lab but clearly she's part border collie and such a lovely personality.  She may be with us for awhile because she is 7 yrs old.  Our little white lap dog (breeds ??) had a front leg amputated yesterday.  It had been broken and never fixed and had been useless awhile.  The vet originally thought he could save it but he couldn't.  Anyway, Precious has a new home, too, with a retired nurse who loves her dearly and has been coming to the shelter to visit her many times a week until her medical issues were taken care of.  As you can see, we do a lot in this community!
Thanks again Kristin,
Carol

To Kristin and Eva and anyone else out their voting for us, THANK YOU SO MUCH!  Even if we don't "win" a grant, it sure is nice to feel the kind of support for our work!

No sweat on the voting.... just takes a minute. Marge is doing really well. Since her bone xray looks almost 100% clear we are backing down her meds. She went from 600 mg daily to 300 mg daily and now 300 mg every other day. We are keeping a super close eye on that paw to make sure there is no licking or yeasty smell. She continues on her holistic plan as well. Things are on the up and up so far. Keep your fingers crossed that this is the last round of meds for her!
