Sadie's coming home on Tuesday. Any advice for food?
« on: September 14, 2007, 02:40:04 PM »

Hi all. Sadie's coming home on Tuesday! She is stable right now, but we are still having to force feed her. So, we talked to the vet and they agreed that she'd probably be much happier at home and it would be easier on her. On Tuesday, they will show me how to maintain her IV and give her pain injections and so forth. My main concern right now is getting her to eat. She's o.k. with the Ensure plus, but like I stated it must be forced on her. However, obviously she will need more then that until she starts eating heartier food. Which hopefully is soon. Slowly, slowly. Any other healthy and nutritious food I should try and feed her? The vet is also supposed to give me some food really high in protein for her. I will try hamburger with rice, chicken, all the good ideas poeple have listed here on the web site, but was hoping for some healthy LIQUID ideas until we can get her to eat heartier. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks,CLS

That's awesome that Sadie's coming home.  I agree I think they do much better in their own environment.  I also try and always talk really upbeat to Buddy.  Let me tell you I've had many heart to heart talks with him in the wee hours of the morning when this all started!

As far as the food goes.  I tried boneless skinless chicken breast, even some of the lunch meats but he only liked them briefly.  Same went for the canned dog foods.  I think I tried every canned gourmet dog & cat food that exists!  One thing I did find that he really enjoyed was I bought those little cups of vanilla icecream.  My friend that works at the vet recommended that.  She also said to try scrambled eggs or cottage cheese.  I still syringe feed Buddy with the Science Diet AD food.  Yesterday was the 1st time I didn't have to syringe feed him for dinner since he was on his eating frenzy!   What a pleasant surprise.

One other thing Buddy loved was icecubes.  He would lick and eat quite a few.  It probably felt good to him since he's continued to always run a pretty steady temp of 104 through all this.  Hope some of this works for you.  Good luck!

I am so excited that Sadie gets to come home and I am so excited that Buddy is eating!!!!!!!!!!! As for the ideas for food... my vet told me that if Marge will eat it give it to her. I have given her everything from canned food and the lunch meat and hamburger and filet mignon and oreos and fig newtons. Her favorite by far is the boneless skinless chicken breasts. We were boiling it but that takes all the flavor out and she wouldn't eat it so we grill it for her and then microwave it everyday and mix it with her regular kibble. So the only suggestion is try and try everything. Marge was so picky that we wrapped bacon in cheese and she would spit it out. I make her peanut sandwiches which she loooooves. I am not sure what you can give her that is liquid though. It's weird because when Marge was on the itroconozole she was really picky with her food but I think that it is because it was the capsule form with the powder and that was too much for her stomach to handle. When we switched her to the fluconozole tablets everything changed with her eating habits. I don't know if it was just a coincidence or what. I wish you the best of luck and I am so glad that Sadie is coming home. I bet she will be so much better at home where she is comfy!

Hi. Thanks for the advice. I just spoke with Sadie's vet and they decided yesterday to put a feeding tube down her nose. They were able to feed her every 2 hours and she kept it all down. Now today is one of those bad days, she's throwing everything back up. :'( Did any of you have trouble with vomiting? I know the pills are hard on the stomach, but she's been vomiting since the start and has lost almost 25-30 pounds. CLS

I did not have problems like that. Marge only vomited maybe twice. Did you ask the vet if you could switch to a pill form instead of a capsule so it is easier on her tummy?
