Hi all. Thanks so much for all of you writing in to this site, it has opened our eyes to so many other people out there that are going through the same type of sadness as my husband and I. Here's our story.
We got Sadie, a female lab x when she was 2 months old, but have been there practically since she was born. We were so pumped to finally bring her home. She received all of her vacinations and got fixed when she was 6 months old. All was good. Until one day she became listless and not wanting to do anything. Went on the net and surfed. She was showing all the signs and symptoms of Lyme disease. Sure enough she came back positive and was on 2 months of doxicycline. She popped right back up. After her 2 months, about 3 days later she got really sick and we freaked out, we thought she was going to die. She was showing all the signs again but worse!! Well, non to happy with my vet, we couldn't get to see the vet for another 2 days, well by then Sadie was her old self again and the vet said to just keep an eye on her.
Well 3 weeks passed and then Sadie started not wanting to eat, we practically had to force her to eat. Well called the vet again and again couldn't see her for a week. We tried everything, even forcing her to eat. Then I bought some wet food and she seemed to enjoy that and ate it for maybe a day and a night. We noticed she was also losing weight, but still very active and wanting to run and play, so we thought maybe she was being fussy. That was on the Friday. Then Friday night we practically had to force her to eat again. By Saturday morning she was vomiting and snubbing her food, not wanting to eat. We had also noticed that when we went to bed that night that she was breathing a little heavier almost wheezing. Well, that was it, that day we brought her to see a new vet and we relayed all her past history to them and they said she was really dehydrated and would need to stay the night on IV. They ran the blood tests and a biocam. All came back good. She was alittle anemic, but they weren't overly concerned. Her liver and heart and kidneys were good and strong. They figured that she ahd a relapse eith the lyme disease and we filled out the presciption and brought her home. Well over the next 2 days, things got worse. She was still snubbing her food and anything, even water she would throw right back up. Brought her back to the same vet and she agreed with me that no way was this lyme disease so we decided to dig further. They took an abdominal x-ray thinking maybe she had something stuck in her intestines, well they captured a piece of her lung and said ohoh. They took a whole chest xray and she had the snow-blizzard effect in all cavities of her lungs. The vet came and talked to me and asked where we lived and where we travel. We live in southern Manitoba right beside a river. She told me she was really confident that this was fungal pneumonia but would have to take some blood and send it off to the states for testing. Sadie didn't have any other signs other than the loss of appetite, weight loss and a small cough at the beginning of the week but had long disappeared by the time we went the first time to see the vet. So we left Sadie there at the vets with an IV going. The next day, Wednesday, the vet called and stated Sadie had developped a few open sores on her one paw, and they were able to test it and bingo definately blastomycosis. The vet was confident that Sadie was young and her organs were strong that she should be able to beat this. They figured she was immuno suppressed from her lyme disease and that was why she caught it. They admitted to seeing a few cases but was still something very rare.
Well, today is Friday and my husband and I are going out of our minds. She still hasn't eaten anything and over the 2 week she has lost 15 pounds! she was 70, now is 55. We live an hour away from her and we both are working which has made it even harder not being able to be by her side. But the vet and her co-workers (there are 8 vets total at this clinic) that Sadie will pull through. We are sick out of our minds and are trying to stay positive, but it;s so hard. My husband will go tomorrow and stay with her and I'm going Monday (I have to work). But has anyone had a situation like this? How was the outcome? We don't want to lose her but we also don't want her to suffer, she's our baby girl. Any encouragement and advise would so be appreciated!
Thanks for listening,CLS
