Waiting for a blasto diagnosis
« on: September 04, 2007, 05:26:30 PM »

We have two chocolate labs, sisters that are 2 years old.  About two months ago JoJo developed a lump on her left shoulder which was about the size of an orange sliced in half implanted under the skin.  Our vet treated her with antibiotics (pills) and the lump went away.  As of 8/23 the lump has reappeared in the same place this time larger and a hacking cough has emerged as a sympton.  Once again our vet treated with antibiotics but the lump appeared to get larger and it is very solid so we took her back this morning instead of waiting to finish the antibiotics.  It is in both lungs per the xrays taken today.  He is running tests for blasto and she is spending the night at the vet office.  After reading all these posts I am very scared we are going to lose her.  I am also worried that her sister may come down with it.  I am also confused on what course of treatment to take.  Some seem to say the aggressive IV is the way to go while others name various other meds to opt for.  She has just begun in the last 24 hours not wanting to eat.  She had and still has a fever and I believe more and more especially after reading all this that it is blasto.  I am determined not to give up on her even if I have to take on a second job to pay for the treatment we are facing.  She has been through a lot in her two years as she has already had hip surgery on both left and right when she was 6 months old and then 1 year old.  This illness sounds like it will make her suffer either way.  Please help us.  What do I do now besides pray and wait for the results?  ----North Carolina

I am devasted at this moment.  Unknown to me at the time I was typing my post my beloved JoJo had already passed.  I came home from work to find my husband on the phone with our vet, tears streaming down his face with the news of her passing.  She had gotten worse this afternoon and her legs buckled and she passed away.  According to the vet it was cancer.  He has taken samples of the lump to determine what kind of cancer, etc.  I am so lost and her sister Sammie keeps looking out the window for her return.  I just don't understand how she was chasing her sister with a ball yesterday and walks in to the vet this morning on her own steam and then hours later she is gone.    North Carolina

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It is so hard to greive especially when another pet is involved because looking at them just makes things worse. While Marge was diagnosed with blasto and we were going through the hardest times with her, one of our kitties passed. He had fip which is an uncurable disease and it was so hard. His brothers and sisters were all looking for him and the one that was closest to him would cry and cry on the stairs waiting for him to come home. It was and is still so hard when I think of him and how awesome of a cat he was and he was my baby. I miss him everyday and he has such a special place in my heart. I miss my Jack so much. Stay strong because Sammie still needs you. I am again very sorry for your loss.  Remember that you and JoJo will meet again.
