Hogan, my Mal, on road to recovery
« on: August 28, 2009, 01:39:49 PM »

I had posted before telling about my Belgian Malinois, Hogan, getting blasto. I want to thank you all for your wonderful responses and support!

After 4 weeks of amphotericin B infusions, and now only on oral itraconizole (through a Canadian pharmacy to save money), he is recovering well. He is still blind, but had his eyes checked yesterday. The opthamologist said in her discharge instructions that the inflammation in the eyes was dramatically better, his pupils constrict when she shined a light in them, and there were very few granulomas left in the retinal tissue.

I didn't get to talk with her directly, but I am assuming there is hope for his sight yet, as she didn't mention any retinal detachment. She is recommending another pressure check in 4 weeks.

He did seem yesterday to be favoring his one leg that was lame before, but I am assuming that is because he is adjusting to just the oral meds. Will keep an eye on him though.

Excellent news for you and Hogan!  I'm glad you stopped in to keep us up on what's going on.

My dog went through the ampho-b + Itra therapy too with great success.  Although it was a buncha years ago.

Hooray! I am so happy that you guys are doing really well. Its great to hear that his retinas may not be detached. I am hoping he will regain his vision. Definitely keep us posted! Congrats on the last month!
