Chili
« on: August 14, 2007, 02:54:41 PM »

I am new to the forum but have been reading some of your posts.  Our second dog was just Diagnosed with Blasto on Monday the 6th.  We lost our other female Taffy on the first of January of this year to the same thing.  We worked the Taffy for 5 days but her breathing was so bad we decided it best to put her down.  Chili is now breathing very rapidly and I am so worried she will not be able to pull through.  I was hoping someone would be able to give me some insight on how long it takes them to slow the breathing after the meds have killed the fungus.  Along with being sick she is also the new mother of 9 babies born on the 1st.  Today, 14 days old they are doing great but no longer feed off mom but have become very familiar with baby bottles.  She still lays by them but we have pretty much taken her burden of feeding away so that she can try to recover herself.  She has stopped eating and is very thin, nothing seems to get her attention so I have been force feeding her 1 to 2 cans of food depending on how much she can take.  She would rather stand at this point because her breathing is so fast but I can get her to lay down from time to time.  any suggestions>

I am so sorry to hear this especially with Chili just having pups. Have you thought about taking her to a clinic with an oxygen tank? When Marge's breathing was bad they told us that if she ever wouldn't lay down because of rapid breathing that we needed to take her to an oxygen tank. That would be my best suggestion. Have you taken her temp? I learned that vets take gauze soaked in rubbing alcohol and wrap dog's feet in it if they are having a heat stroke to reduce their body temp. How long have you been treating chili? Marge's breathing was never that bad where she wouldn't lay down or put her head down but her breathing improved in about three weeks. I will be thinking of you guys.

We started her on intraconizole on Monday the 6th so today will be her 10th dose.  She laid down last night & slept for the first time in 2 days.  I think she was just so worn out from standing that she had no other option.  This morning she is back up again and will lay down if I ask her to but otherwise stands.  She isn't keeping food down so she is looking so thin that I don't think she will have the energy to stand much longer.  Her breathing & eating are her only problems, no coughing, no temp any longer, she drinks water often, no sores, her eyes are clear.  I will look into the oxygen tank but I don't think it is an option due to the high cost.   Thanks for your help & concern.

Marge wasn't doing as well when she was on the itroconozole but we changed her meds to the fluconozole and what a difference it made. her whold everything changed. She had her spirits back and her breathing was much better. I don't know if that would work for you. I know that the oxygen tank is pretty expensive. Best of luck to you. Have you been giving her different foods to try to see if she can hold anything else down? Rice and chicken or beef broth? That's pretty easy on the stomach. It took us a while to find what really got her going. There is a paste that you can buy at any pet store and it is HIGH calorie and protein and Marge wouldn't eat anything but that for a few days. At least it was getting a lot of calories into her. It definitely brought her appetite back too. You can look into that?.

Sorry to hear about Chili.  Dirtbike did the same thing. We gave her a bit of prednisone to help her breathing, but it does suppress the immune system.  Our vet said the same about the O2 tent, but the cost is ridiculous.  She toughed it out, but I had many sleepless nights with her.  Keep your spirits up - and be positive.  We have our bouncing-happy Dirtbike back again, and it was worth it all.
