Another Victim of Blasto
« on: July 11, 2007, 05:30:36 PM »

Had my 7 year old Siberian Husky, Dakota, euthanized 10 July 2007 due to being infected by Blasto as determined by our vet. We live in Scottsburg, Indiana, which apparently has a very high incident rate of Blasto. My brother-in-law lost several dogs 3 years ago under similiar circumstances, he lives approx. 15 miles east of Scottsburg. Dakota started displaying signs of lethargy and went down hill rapidly over two weeks, vet suspected initial infection was probably 4 months ago. Dakota's condition was such that the vet did not feel the drug regime would have been successful and that Dakota was suffering too much to delay euthanization.

So sorry for your loss.  It's hard to understand why some can be treated and some can't.  We live near Muncie, and our vet was very familiar with it.
Our sympathy,

I am so sorry for your loss of Dakota. It is such a scary disease and I am sure that you know how hard these dogs have to fight. It is even harder because they can't talk to us to tell us to they don't feel good. Cherish your memories of Dakota. I am sure that he is in doggy heaven playing and running and having a good old time. I have a dog with blasto that we are treating right now and I lost my kitty this morning to another horrible disease. Stay strong. We are about 45 miles west of Chicago in the burbs and I have never heard of blasto. The vet however has treated several dogs. I just met somebody yesterday at work that has a friend with blasto that he contracted in Madison WI from digging in his bushes. It is crazy!
Peace to Dakota
