Leg Pain will it go away?
« on: June 23, 2007, 12:48:35 PM »

I was infected by Blasto last fall sometime.  I started feeling sick and after about 3 weeks I went to the doctor.  Was told I had pnumonia given meds and sent on my way.  The next night the pain was so bad I had to stand up all night , went back to the DR and was told I now had plurisy given more meds and sent home.  I was suppose to follow up with the pulmonary Dr. but was told I couldn't get in for three months.  So I went back to my GP and told him I still had trouble breathing and constant pain in my legs.  He had me do an ultrasound on my legs and a cat scan of my chest. As soon as he got the cat scan he made an appointment with the pulmonary Dr. (that I couldn't get into for 3 months) the next day.  Dr was very good and explained what he saw showed me the cat scan and my right lung was about 1/2 the size it should be with a large mass in the plural cavity. I thought they would just drain it but instead told  me it was solid and I was reffered to a thorasic surgeon. When I went to the surgeon he took one look at me and wanted to know what I was doing there.  I looked fine, a little weight loss, but no other outward signs of illness.  I just handed him the disc with the scan and after he looked at it the first words he said was "This is complicated".  Though cancer was never said it definetly was implied.  The surgeon had to do a complete thorocotamy on  my right side, took out the mass, part of the lung and my lymph nodes.  After the surgery he told me no cancer and thought it was just a viral infection.  Followed up a month later, legs still hurting, and was told the same thing all byopsies were negative and it was viral in nature.  A month later, legs still hurting, got a call from the Department of Health.
Seems a biopsy came back positve for blasto.  The report never made it to any of my Drs and floated around for about a month before the Dept. of Health could track me down by my zip code.  So finally was refered to an ifectous disease Dr which started me on Itraconazole, 4 pills a day.  Legs still hurting went back 2 weeks later and had blood work done.  Not enough serum was getting into my blood so he upped the dosage and was told once the meds get into my blood the pain will go away.
Now I am taking 6 pills a day and the last blood work showed enough serum in my blood.  However my legs still hurt all the time, I have small muscle spasms in the legs most of the day and get leg cramps at night.  Has anybody expierenced the same type of pain?  If so did the meds finally work and after how long?

What you've been through is just ridiculous, but I'm glad that you've finally been diagnosed properly.  It's sad to see people go through so much unnecessary pain and illness before finding out what's wrong.  I've heard that the die-off from the first few weeks of treatment is very painful and can make you feel like crap.  It's been that way with our dog for sure.

Sure hope that you're on your way to recovery.  I'm waiting on test results now to find out if I have rheumatoid arthritis, and if they come back negative I think I need to be tested for Blasto too (given my history), as this awful pain is spreading into other joints.  Blasto can cause fungal arthritis, and I don't believe that it's normal to go from being fine 9 months ago to being barely able to walk now.  Self diagnosis is folly, but it doesn't hurt to be able to point drs. in the right direction.

Best to you-
