Willie-4 yr old Bichon/shihtzu-confirmed blasto
« on: April 15, 2017, 05:14:05 PM »

First Name of Patient  Willie
Species bichon/shihtzu
Sex   Male
Age at first symptoms   4 yrs 2 months
Year of first symptoms   2017
Country   USA
Patient's Locality Mequon, Wisconsin
Did this patient survive-we're hoping so. He was first thought to have Lyme's disease, then Leptospirosis and was treated with an antibiotic.  Finally he saw an emergency vet who was familiar with blastomycosis.  Went to eye vet, who is an expert, sight was already gone in one eye, working very hard to save the other.  Nothing in the lungs, high white count and increased liver functions.
After five days, fever gone and appetite is returning.  Our bundle of energy is slowly showing signs of his former self.
Was there an official medical diagnosis of Blastomycosis?   Yes
How and where do you think this patient caught Blastomycosis?  We have a pond in our backyard and there has been clearing of old trees for new construction nearby...we don't know
Symptoms   Lethargy, fever, loss of appetite, lameness, track lesions, big nasty red eye
Treatment   Itraconazole, prednisone, cephalex and a host of eye drops
Cost of Treatment (optional)   Itraconazole-$94.49 per month at Costco, Cephalex-$30 at Walgreens (goodrx) one drop prescription-$36.50 at Walgreens (goodrx) other three drops and ointment are under $10 with goodrx

Sorry to hear that Willie contracted this awful thing, but sounds like he's feeling better already. Happy to see the price of Itra is coming down so more people can afford to treat their fur-babies. In 2008 it was around $500 for the first 28 days Itra for my Harley, of course being a Lab, he probably required a higher dose than Willie but the price would still have been horrible. I had to go thru a pharmacy in Canada to not go broke treating Harley.

Good luck with Willie, sounds like he's on the road to recovery :)
