Wilson update...
« on: February 26, 2007, 11:44:54 AM »

Well Wilson has been on treatment for 7 weeks now.
He is doing much better but still has a way to go.
His CBC has come back great and no problems with the meds. But then again we are only treating 1x's a day so his liver does not get over taken. We are expecting a 100% recover but it will take some time yet.
Everyone hang in there and it is very scary. But with lots of love and help from up above they can make it.
It takes a very looong time.

It's refreshing to hear how well your loyal friend is doing. Our dog was diagnosed with blasto about 3 weeks ago and was started on Itraconazole.  He still has somewhat of a cough, but much better compared to when he was diagnosed.  He isn't very active, but he now is able to jump onto the bed and sleep at night.  He has lost weight, but I guess this is to be expected.  Do you have any suggestion as to what to do to encourage him to eat and drink?  I use a spray bottle with pedialyte in it to help supplement his fluid needs. Thanks for any suggestions you may be able to give.

Hi Deb-
Sorry to hear you're going through the same thing. This is day 12 of Dirtbike's treatment, and I'm cautiously saying she's doing much better. (Of course that could change at any time...)
She has had a high energy level compared to some of the other stories I've read, but the medicine is keeping her down. She had already lost 14 lbs. by the time she was diagnosed, and has probably lost another 10. She normally weighs 80 or more, so she's got a little reserve.
When she wouldn't eat or drink, I tried "priming the pump". If she was lying down, not drinking, I'd lift up her lip (she's a hound-dog) and pour some water into her mouth. She'd sputter, but then drink a bowl.  Same with eating: Lifted up her lip and smeared it full of peanut butter. By the time she was done cleaning that up, she felt like trying something else, like a sausage or hot dog. She doesn't seem to like anything hard or crunchy yet. She's also being spoiled with high protein and high calorie foods, but I don't care. It helps that we have 2 other dogs, so the competition factor is there.
Today she has eaten several different things, and drank at least 4 bowls of water on her own. Her breathing is much better, and she stayed out all night and most of the day with the neighbor dogs.  She apparently was not as far along as some cases I've read about.
We've also been using supportive doses of tetracycline (for any secondary bacterial infections) and prednisone for her breathing, but only if she's having a hard time. I'm going to find some vitamin drops for her tomorrow.

Good luck-

deb

sorry to hear about your dog it is a very hard battle but well worth it
read othe posts with supplement ideas

try feeding green tripe can food

solid gold makes it and so does tripett but small amounts at first until dogs system gets us to it.
this food it very good for sick dogs it smells but they love it it smell really bad (it is from the inside stomach of a cow)
the smell alone will gt them going
what area are you from?
what parts of the body are involed?

hang in there

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion of the dog food....but I don't know where to find it.  Do the pet stores carry it?  My Perry had blasto in the lungs...it isn't a very pretty looking.  We have been going at this for about 1 month and just wish he would give some sign that he might start turning the corner.  I did find some "dogsure", it's like Ensure for people but made for dogs.  I also give him nutracal. This is a paste that is high in calories and nutrients.  I get it on the back of his tongue and he has to swallow it.  I also give a jar of ham baby food twice a day.  There's alot of protein it. I just dip it out of the jar with my fingers and place at the back of his tongue and again he has no other choice but to swallow it.  I did start him on dog vitamins.  He's a good boy and was there in my time of need.  I will do my best to fight this.  Prayers work wonders.  Thanks again for suggestions.

well it has been almost 2 months since I updated about dear sweat wonderful Wilson.
He continues to get better every month. It really has been a looooog haul!!! Our vet did tells us this. And he was so very right!!
Wilson still has blasto in his lungs and right front leg.
But it seems everything else has gotten better.
He does get tired very easy still. But he does get to go on our hikes in the woods, and has for awhile now. He is sooo very happy to go and run again.I ish I new or could post picture here of him and the first time in 6 months he was able to go in the river again. The joy in his face and body said it all. It was worth everything we have done for him just to see that again. He does have to take it a bit easy but he is doing much better. He even cought me a chipmunck.Never did that before.
He is still on his supplements that I added to his diet.
I did also add bee pollen from the health store (raw bee pollen)
helps his immune system and engery without the carbs that feeds blasto (the yeast it turns into in there body)

i do get days still where i wished he was 100% and have a hard time understanding why he is still sick. Barney another dog we know was off meds in 9 weeks. (he is still doing great!!)And Danny who is now blind and doing wonderful to i think he is still on meds to.
this hot sticky weather is hard on wilson but he hated the heat from the get go.the 4th was horrible!!!! we are so glad it is over.

wilson continues to amaze me as always. he has tought me soooo much.
He is most defietntly a MIRACLE!!!!
everyone hang in there have hope and beleive in them and God.

Soo glad to hear about Wilson! You guys have been thru so much, he's a real trooper.  I really don't know anyone who has done more for their animal, and gone through what you have.

We think about Wilson all the time - knowing how he was doing got us through DB's sickness.  If it weren't for the panting after her pill (which doesn't seem to be every day), I'd almost be ready to see if it's time to stop the medicine, but we'll maybe keep her on it for another month.  She doesn't mind taking it - loves her butter.

Go Wilson!

It is so awesome to hear that Wilson is doing so good! Wilson's progress is such an inspiration for us with Marge. We still pray for her everyday and as you I didn't believe that God was on my side but He has helped Marge make it this far. She is such a trooper just like Wilson. Marge is not very heat tolerant either and the fourth was very hard on us as well. She didn't like fireworks to start so her breathing was very bad and very high temp while they were being fired off. We made it through it by helping her along with cool towels and lots of ice and pedialyte popsicles. Homer (her big brother) has been so good to her and he is starting to see his best friend come around more and more everyday and he's getting so excited when she gets up and plays. I cannot believe how much joy and happiness these animals bring to my life. We decided that when Marge is 100% better we are going to take her and Homer on vacation because we all deserve it (especially Marge). She has never been swimming in her life (just wading in a kiddie pool we got them) so I would love to show her the ocean. Everybody stay strong and CONGRATS WILSON!!

Eva,
You mentioned Marge's high temperature...DB ran a fever for so long that her poor nose dried up and cracked.  I kept putting Carmex or Neosporin on it, but she totally hated anything on her snoot. Now that her fever's broken her nose has healed and is normal.

wilson had a fever for 3 months about 104 to 105 the pain meds kept it down to normal once the swelling in the legs went and the blasto seem to have gone from his legs the fever went for good. I had to take his temp 4 x's a day to watch it.

I am happy to hear that Wilson is still doing well and is tolerating the medication.  I hope that continues!
