question about fleas
« on: November 17, 2007, 11:12:29 PM »

hi guys -

have any of you noticed your monthly flea/tick treatment not working as well while on treatment.  All of a sudden Moose has fleas that are not responding to the frontline.  I think I have them in my house now which is freaking me out.  Any advice on how to get rid of them?!?

i have not noticed any difference but that doesn't mean you might not once flea season started i ask wilsons vet about putting the frontline on and he said it was fine i do not do heartworm preventative herding dogs carry a MDR1 gene and it can kill them
this is what we do with the rescue dogs i get in (some are sooo bad there isnt a spot that there isnt a flea)
we give them a Capstar first
then a bath (not a flea bath) to get all the flea poo off them then frontline plus sometimes a 2nd dose of Capstar is needed depends on how bad the fleas are
i will warn you though the capstar starts to work in 30 mins. and the dog will start scratching like crazy and fleas will be jumping off they do die i confine the animal being treated for 24 hours the capstar only kills the adult fleas but somtimes when the fleas are that bad and bathing and frontline do not work we us the capstar also the house may need to be sprayed
ask you vet if the capstar cn be used with the blasto meds it should be safe  this works much better then a flea dip/bath or anything else

We didn't do flea or parasite (heartworm) treatment of any kind until last month, because we didn't want any extra stress on her system.  We were too scared to compromise her until the blasto was gone.  The vet didn't advise us not to, it was our own decision. Now it's cold and there aren't many fleas anyway.
Good luck-
