Saving my baby...
« on: August 29, 2011, 11:32:05 AM »

Thank you for taking the time to read what I am sure will be a lengthy post by the time I'm done writing this!

Our 7 yr old male dog Teko is sick. His only real physical symptom right now is lymph node swelling in most outer glands (problems breathing/swallowing because the ones in his neck are swollen horridly). We haven't had him tested yet but are booking him in this week as we know we have to rule out Lymphoma. My problem is that I'm not convinced it's cancer. I know he is sick, but he isn't "sickly". For all of his outer lymph nodes to be effected, he would have to be stage III or further and he doesn't seem sick enough to be. He still gets excited, he still runs through the house, he still gets excited for food, catches his treats, essentially, he's still himself with some breathing problems. So, let me further this belief with what we've been going through since February of this year:

February 2011:

Teko's eyes are red and watery. We don't think much of it as his eyes get that way when he's stressed out. Fast forward a few weeks and he starts getting barky-er like he is barking at ever single possible noise he hears. I mention to my husband that I think his vision might be going if his other senses are kicking in like that. But his eyes got really red and started dripping green goop. So into the vet he goes. He was diagnosed with eye infection and given Prednisone eye drops and an eye antibiotic gel. Fast forward not even a week later and my husband takes Teko out for a drive. They get home and they go to come through the front door with the concrete stairs, and Teko walks right into the stairs, basically falls into them, and then starts freaking. We had to guide him in. He was completely blind. Rushed him to the vets and they said it was some form of systemic infection and prescribed oral Prednisone in lower doses. 4 days in and he had his vision again, but it didn't last. We had him into the vets 2 more times from him just instantly losing his sight. (It’s important to mention that before all of this we had his blood work done because he was 40lbs overweight and diets were not helping. He was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and started the meds 2 days before his eye sight went.)

March 2011:
I went insane researching his symptoms and how he looked. His eyes were red and bulging, but not like they were going to pop out of his head. His corneas were clouded (we thought glaucoma at first) and the vet said she seen floaters when his eyes started to clear up. I finally found a blog about another dog who looked like and experienced everything we were going through with Teko. The owner had taken the dog to every specialist under the sun and had a diagnosis of polymyositis. There was no way we could afford all the testing at that time. We contacted the vet with the information we found and she hummed and hawed and did that thing that vets and doctors do when you do your own research. Anyways, we had Teko on 50mg of Prednisone a day and kept him on that for almost 4 weeks, then very slowly weaned him off of the stuff.

May 2011:

Teko’s last prednisone pill was given this month. Eyes were still clear. But his front right elbow is swollen so big he can barely walk. We go back to the vet more than twice for that leg. Once it was infected and we had him on heavy duty antibiotics that helped the infection, but did nothing for the swelling or open sores.  Another time we went in, they had no idea what was causing it, but it wasn’t visually infected. They sent us home with more antibiotics. We stopped them 3 days in because he ended up so sick from them he had diarrhoea and we just couldn’t get them into him anymore. He fought us so hard. So we just stopped. His leg would stay like this for the rest of this month and most of next.

July 2011:

His leg hadn’t healed, his skin was getting so much worse (flaky, dry) he just wasn’t doing good. On the suspicion that he has wheat allergies I searched out my different options. I found something that I never would have considered in my life prior to doing extensive research. All 3 of our dogs were switched to a Whole Prey Raw Food diet. Within less than a week his skin was perfect, his fur that was completely gone with the thyroid problems was coming in soft and smooth and thicker than before. His sores had healed themselves, his leg was pretty much back to normal. We had our puppy back! Also, new symptom (though we assumed it had more to do with him losing 40lbs since the thyroid meds) he started snoring.

August 2011:

The snoring kept up and we just got used to it, until 2 weeks ago when it got scary. He wasn’t sleeping properly because he was seemingly choking when he fell asleep. We felt so awful for him. We had an appointment for him this following Saturday. The Tuesday prior is when I noticed his lymph nodes in his neck were swollen pretty badly. Started researching that, and didn’t like that his symptoms sounded like lymphoma. We so aren’t ready to lose him! Given the information on lymphoma, I started checking his other lymph nodes and noticed that only the other lymph nodes on the side of him where his leg was swollen are enlarged –neck, groin, armpit, knee (except under his jaw, those are enlarged all the way around).  His eyes were reddish again, and were leaking fluid, again. His ears were full of pus on Friday. I took video of that. But I wrapped his head/neck in warm towels 4 times before the vet appointment and his whole face was waxy like his ears were draining, and by the time the vet seen him, his ears looked perfect to her. The vet felt him and said that it’s more than likely Lymphoma. She can’t do the testing, we were referred to other hospitals/universities that could. So, in the meantime, we are researching to give us hope. There are so many odd diseases/viruses/infections that mimic Lymphoma that I feel bad for people who can’t afford the tests and just euthanize to save their pet the pain of having cancer. So very sad. Anyhow, back to Teko. Just wanted to mention that we had been fighting “Cannon Butt” where it wasn’t quite diarrhoea but just loose mud like stools for a while. Only a few times on the raw diet did he end up with normal BMs again. But, there is one week in particular that we seen him doing great , then it was like his immune system was compromised by something because that week we ended up with Cannon Butt again, his started scratching and nipping at his elbows (that were healed previously), and his eyes started to get red/watery again. I assumed that what dropped his immune system was that he got table scraps that week. Breads specifically (the possible wheat allergy I mentioned earlier). But it’s gone downhill since then.

We live in Ontario and specifically, we live in the Niagara Region. Not a hot spot for blastomycosis, I know. But, most houses here sit on damp, swamp like properties. Ours was almost a pond at any given time. Our dogs use the back yard to do their business, and quite often lay out there in the same back yard. Also, in and around this time, my husband started digging a hole from one end of our yard to the other to (eventually) house drainage tubes. But, there were times where said hole was full of water until it was drained. Also, we caught just our male drinking the water sometime as well. So it isn’t a far stretch that it could be some sort of bacterial infection, rather than something like Lymphoma. If fact, my husband pointed out that Teko has been sick (ear infections etc) since we first moved here. But whether or not it’s blastomycosis is another story. We seem to cover every symptom but the coughing. Although, when our son was an infant, he had bronchiolitis from RSV and we learned (the hard way) that skin being pulled up under the rib cage or around the clavicles was a sign that the lungs aren’t functioning properly. Teko’s mouth, as silly as it sounds, if he keeps it closed while breathing, the skin draws inward which it has never done. So it’s possible there is lung involvement? I’m possibly just grasping right now. But either way, he’s on 50mg of Prednisone to bring the swelling down in the lymph nodes, which has barely worked. Just enough to make him comfortable again. But, if it is Lymphoma, the Prednisone used for more than 7 days can make the chemo ineffective. So we’re grasping until the testing. To take him off of the Prednisone now without something to put him on that may work, means we’re putting him in the position of not sleeping/eating/breathing again.

Any advice that others who are more experienced would be appreciated before I go running to the vet with another magical possible diagnosis.

Thank you so much for your time reading this and responding!

Crystal (and Teko!)

Get the Blasto test done!  My little Rory, today passed away in the ICU at Ottawa's Alta Vista Animal Hospital.  He started with eye symptoms in May 2011 and despite, as yourself, running to the vet with every new symptom that came up, treating the symptoms but still coming up with "unknown" cause.  I had to take him off his Metacam on Tuesday and by Thursday he was experiencing breathing issues so, more vets and more x rays and blood work.  This morning at 10:30 they diagnosed Blasto and by 11 a.m. this horrible fungus had taken every ounce of fight left in him and he passed away before they could start the treatment.  My heart is just broken and I would encourage you to insist upon the test...it will be the best few hundred dollars you will spend in the long run.  I believe that in May when the eye problems started, had anyone even suggested this as a possible cause, I would have demanded they do the test...if nothing else to rule it out.  You will find a common thread when reading most people's experience, be it positive or negative outcome, that most cases were told that it is either Blasto or Cancer.  So, hopefully you will find out before it's way too late to help your best friend.  Good luck and I wish your dog a positive outcome in recovery.  Best wishes...Bonnie

I agree - test for blastomycosis so it can be ruled in or out in your search for help for Teko.

MiraVista is a lab that can test for Blasto from a urine sample. Have your vet contact them - http://miravistadiagnostics.com/services.aspx?o=blastomycosis

So last night he started vomiting. He threw up everything that we gave him that entire day. Not a thing was digested at all. Not even his pills. But, he had white froth (like beaten egg whites) all through it. After he had a few really good empties.. he was great! I was at the hospital all night and I have mono (really??) and my husband bbq'ed some steaks for them when he got in. Teko devoured it! He has had stuff all day today, and he hasn't thrown up! This morning I did notice that our dogs normally white teeth were caked in plaque, and he wouldn't chew his food (just mouthed it and used his front teeth to pull). So I pulled back his lips and seen that he had (essentially) a canker on the inside of his mouth and one on the outside directly from it (it's on the top right where his long tooth sits). We had him at the vets though and she's positive it's Lymphoma (even the cankers, she said those are likely the Lymphoma spreading.. nothing to do with the fact that he's throwing up froth and bile..) and she said that nothing bacterial /viral could cause his outer lymph nodes to swell. So we are taking him to the oncologist on Friday, but I feel like it's not soon enough. What if he's worse by then and it's untreatable Blasto?? Why is my vet not listening to us? Teko has gone on walks today, he was down by the beach, he's just been our puppy today:) I just still don't buy this Lymphoma thing. I mean, it very much could be.. but I don't have that gut feeling. We'll talk to the oncologist and see which to test for. I'm thinking maybe see if she'll test for blasto, and treat in the meantime, and if it comes back negative, we can likely assume it's Lymphoma and decide if we want to start chemo. So lost.. just wish I had more money tucked away for this kind of stuff!!

Did you read that lesions are common with Blasto too?  That is also a symptom listed and mentioned within the article.  You're the one paying the vet to assist your dog in recovery and I would think that whatever testing you want done, your vet should be doing them.  You are your dog's advocate...do whatever you have to do to get what you want.  You'll be glad you did.  Good luck Teko   :-*

The vet found abscesses in Surf's mouth too, but she was gone before we got a diagnosis, so I can't say for sure it was blasto - just suspected.

If you are willing to pay for the blasto test, I would trust your gut and find a vet who will send away the sample.

We're pullin' for ya Teko!!

Here I am again. I'm calling the oncologist today. When we were in the vets yesterday I was hugging Teko and his lungs felt raspy. I mentioned something about it and was told that Saturday they checked his lungs and they were "perfect". I let it slide, but last night Teko started snoring/breathing funny again and I sat down and put my hands on both sides of him, and I didn't have to really feel around or anything. His chest feels like there is popcorn bouncing around in there. I grabbed my husband (who said he checked him earlier and felt nothing) and put his hands over his actual lungs.. not his stomach.. and he felt it too! Teko has definite lung congestion. No coughing to date.. but there is definitely fluid or something in there. I am SO scared that by the time someone sees him that will start the meds before a confirmed diagnosis, that it will be too late:( If we lose him because of idiots who want to believe that he has nothing besides Lymphoma and because they think I do too much research and dismiss it.. so upset right now. I'm printing off every piece of information, and even similar stories with positive Blasto results to take to the oncologist on Friday (can't get in before that..). Does anyone know if the pharmacy in Arizona is still around and if you need a prescription to get the meds? I'd love to just start Teko on it soon as his tests are done. After the testing, there is no way we could afford close to $500 for the first month of Itra! I want him on the stuff as soon as possible. We're going on 2 weeks of horrid breathing. I'm afraid we're running out of time:(

PS. Just wanted to say thank you for the positive words for Teko and for any help on this. I'm sorry to those who have lost their best friends to this. I may find out that it isn't blasto in the end, but this board has opened my eyes to the fact that not every single case has to be written off as Lymphoma (before testing that is). More people need to know about Blasto. For our pets health and ours as well. If the vets were more open to this as a possibility, maybe dogs that have sudden eye problems that look to be systemic infections or auto-immune related, might be tested automatically for Blasto. Maybe sudden swollen lymph nodes will one day prompt automatic treatment for Blasto before going the Lymphoma route. Maybe there would be more red flags up. Maybe there would be less unnecessary euthanasias. I plan to open my mouth about Blasto to anyone who listens. Thank you guys so much for this forum and the experience that is already here!

Blasto manifests in many different ways.  My Lolas started in her thoratic lymph.  Initially I took her into the vet bc of excessive drooling.  She did have the vomiting white frothy stuff and the diareah as it progressed.  They thought it was an autoimmune disorder and jacked her up with steroids which made it much, much worse.  Getting you pup on fluconazole or Itra won't hurt her. Have them start the antifungals and send in a pee sample to MariVista.  It would end up being a lot cheaper in the long run if it is Blasto and not Lymph.  Insist on the test and the antifungals.  Have you done a chest xray?  The prednione will keep down inflamation in the lungs and could be hiding symptoms.  Please get your pup tested.

Your vet should be able to take a sample from a lession and look at it right there. If the symptoms are all over the place, blasto would be my first thought.  I'm in alabama.  Not a hotspot for Blasto either.....but my dog has it.

Back again with another new symptom. I have been hand feeding him today both water and food. I managed to get 28oz of water into him, and several smaller sources of food (like 2 raw eggs, 4 tbsp of peanut butter, etc). He is about to enjoy a bbq'd steak dinner too. But, he isn't peeing enough at all. He peed twice at 5 am, and twice at 5 pm. Not a lot, but peed. He's had one BM today that consisted of runny (but not watery) poop, but not a lot in my opinion. Not from a dog who on average would drop a good pile at least twice a day. Also, his tummy is bloated a bit which I assume is because he isn't going properly. He isn't swollen anywhere so I'm sure there isn't kidney failure etc. What happened tonight though, has me scared. Had him out for a car ride with the family which he looooved. But, when we got home, he walked into the garage and just stood there. Our youngest turned the big garage light off, but the other one was still on. We could still see fine, it just wasn't daylight bright. Teko started freaking. He fell to the ground and I thought he was having neuro problems, but he was just frozen in fear. Turned on the light and he was fine. We gave him the last of the prednisone drops when we got in, and another 50mg oral Pred tablet. His eyes are bright red again, and they are goopy. I do NOT want him losing his eye sight. I also don't want to lose him if this has again passed the eye/blood barrier. A heavy routine of Pred drops, high Pred tablets, and a couple other meds is what kept his eyesight last time, I'm sure. But, this time theres the swollen lymph nodes, the lung involvement, and a lot of lesions along with the stomach problems. I will be taking the day tomorrow to start calling every vet/vet office that I can find in Southern Ontario to see if anyone has dealt with Blasto before, or would be willing to test for it/treat it before even considering testing for Lymphoma. Our vet was so positive that nothing else (bacterial, viral, or fungal) could cause this and wasn't willing to do anything BUT send us to have his Lymphoma staged. There has to be someone out there who knows or is willing to know otherwise. I will be printing a ton of information over the next 24 hours. If I can't find anyone before the oncologist appointment.. she is going to drown in information.

Oh, and Teko is beautiful! What kind of dog is she?

When my duke was diagnosed, I had a great vet who actually did a lung aspiration on the spot and had a diagnosis with in 15 minutes. He knew what he was looking for. But most vets that aren't familiar with blasto
have to send away including the urine test Mira Vista. Time is of the essence. Duke only had a 50/50 chance. They put him on Sporonox immediately. He is now a healthy happy guy!

Thank you Cathy for the information! I told my husband I was going to call the vets up there already, but that helps narrow it for me!

Teko is a bit of a mutt. My husband was told that he was Australian Shepher/Border Collie. But I think he's more Rottie/Border Collie myself. He is such an amazing animal. I love him dearly and have fought to keep him around. He bit my knee (bad) when I was 36 weeks pregnant and I kept my mouth shut about what happened so he wouldn't have to be euthanized. It was only me that he was grouchy with. Not the kids, other animals, or strangers. I knew something was wrong with him and wanted so desperately to fix him. It was a struggle living with him until the vet finally checked his thyroid this year. I was under the assumption it had been tested previously, as it was my first suspicion. 24 hrs after his first thyroid pill and he was curled up to me!!! I have this crazy connection to him and he knows it. I'm the only one he "communicates" with. He wants something specific? He comes to me and I figure it out. As crazy as it sounds, I asked him a series of questions 3 days ago. I asked him if he has cancer and just looked at me. I asked him if he was done fighting and again just stared at me. I asked him if he has something we can fix, like a yucky virus and his ears went up and he started talking! He's so smart that I believe he knew what I said or at least got the gist. I also told him to tell me when he's done and can't take anymore. He put his chin in my hand and looked at me like "Not yet Mom!" I also keep reminding him that if this is Blasto, we need him to stay strong and we will help him fight it. I tell him that it might be awful, but to give us at least 2 weeks of him being very sick and us giving him all the TLC in the world. He's my baby and in the event things don't turn out how we'd like, at least I know he's had a lifetime of never-ending love that some people never even get to experience!!

You sound like me with my DUKE. I'm so connected with him and it was killing me when he was so sick. I love that you ask him things! I have done the same thing. :) I have 2 Australian Shepherds too! They are so very smart.
Let me know how you make out calling the vets here. Do you know when you might get blasto tests back? Some vets may put them on Sporonox before the results come back if they are thinking blasto. I worry about Teko's eyes too! How is Teko today?
If you start blasto meds, give with fat every time. It helps absorb the meds into the body. There is lots of info on this site. Well Duke and I are rooting for Teko! Good luck! Cathy

We have to find a vet who will do the test for us. Our regular vet wouldn't even consider it. We have the oncologist appointment tomorrow, but being the oncologist deals with cancer, she will only be staging lymphoma. So I'm not sure if she would skip staging Lymphoma in favor of testing for Blasto. It's sad to think that Teko is our dog, and we should be able to have the final say on his care. I get that I have WAY less education in these fields than these vets and specialists do, but it doesn't mean that I don't know my dog and don't research like crazy. If Blasto isn't around these areas, why would they know about it? Why would it be something they test? It really wouldn't be. But he has all the symptoms. I get that in the end, this might just be cancer. I get that I'm emotionally connected to Teko and would prefer not to lose him. I don't want to endanger him either. I'm having a difficult time realizing that if we do the xray/urine test/sample from the lesions, we won't be able to afford Lymphoma staging or chemo. So it's a one or the other scenario right now. But I'm so sure that Teko is sick with something other than cancer. It's my gut feeling. It just fits right now. I told my husband that maybe they can take the sample from the lesions first and do the smear to see if they find it. But a) I hope they know what it is, or can at least find the information for what they are looking for and b) I hope we don't have to pay $300 to see this person just to have the same resistance. It should be about saving Teko, and if we want to have something ruled out first, it should be done. I just fear that we won't have any money left to get him tested if they just stay stuck on Lymphoma:( Also, I need an RX for Itra. I have all the websites saved with price comparisons for the real thing and generics. We just need someone to write an RX for us so we can get it:( Teko weighs 85lbs, so my understanding is the first 5-10 days (preferably closer to 10) he needs 10mg per kg a day. Which puts as at almost 4 pills a day. Which is $28/day based on a rough $7/pill (can be more or less unless I can get the Itra online initially). I just want to find a vet who listens to us. It shouldn't be this hard. I'm tempted to tell them that the end of the summer last year we spent the week in Kenora;) Either way, I'm printing out all the information I can find, his entire story and symptom list, the lab information (what they're looking for in the smear), MiraVista test information and contact, and the numbers for the Kenora vets, just in case. I hope they listen to me.

Teko has been great for the past 2 days. Besides the eyesight thing that is. It's day time so I'm not seeing it as bad today, but we'll see tonight. He's drinking lots, he's peed this morning, and he just had a loose poop, but more than he's done so far. The peanut butter seems to be helping him eat which is awesome! He had 4 raw eggs yesterday, quite a bit of steak, lots of peanut butter, some cheese, and 35oz of water that I know he drank! He at least doesn't seem sickly anymore. He has energy and just has the swollen lymph nodes and the heavy panting as symptoms now. He still isn't really chewing though. Just squishes the food with his mouth. Not sure if this is the swollen lymph nodes or his teeth are hurting.

Off to call some vets and get some opinions. Is there anything specific I should be asking the Kenora vets? I really don't want to bother anyone, but I really want to make sure we can at least rule Blasto out (although part of me is hoping it's treatable Blasto over the alternative!)
