Compounded itraconazole vs Name Brand Sporanox
« on: November 12, 2007, 11:42:35 PM »

I have read a couple posts here stating that the compounded form has lower absorption rates than that of the round micro bead capsule form of Sporanox.  Any links to studies out there?  Should increase fat intake with the generic compounded form to better metabilize the drug.  Pando says he will bong the drug if need be:)

Share first hand experiences (symptoms and outcomes) with pets that have made the transition from Sporanox to the compounded form.

We used compounded Itra from Pet Health Pharmacy in AZ from the beginning, 150 mg./day caps.  I did find a study (which I can't find again) that said to give it with a fatty food, as it is better metabolized with something like that in the stomach. She hated peanut butter, and was eating nothing but Ensure Plus (force-fed) and maybe some Little Cesar dinners (try keeping a dog that size on LC dinners- waay expensive).
I finally stuck the capsule in a tsp. of margarine (Country Crock!) which she really liked.

In order to take her mind off the capsule being in it, I would smear some on her snoot at the same time.  She would swallow the pill quickly because she was pre-occupied with licking margarine off her nose.
Even after treatment she still asks for her butter, but that's not happening.  I think it also made her feel special, as the other dogs didn't get any.

One odd thing - Millie would sniff the spoon w/ butter and Itra, and run away.  Obie would've eaten it if I let him, but Millie was scared of it.  As you can see from prev. posts, DB's outcome has been excellent, soooo...

We had Marge on the tablet form of fluconozole from CVS but it was super expensive. We were paying $500+/ month. Jen suggested Pet Health Pharmacy in AZ so we ordered some up and it was only $23/month. We were super excited about it but after two days of taking it, Marge wouldnt eat and was very lethargic. The vet said that the compounded form was way too hard on her stomach so we had to switch back to tablet form. Luckily, I called around and found it at WalMart for only $45/month! I told my vet about that and she is in shock because of what I was paying at CVS. marge did a total turnaround once we put her back on tablet form and was back to eating and running around. I think it all just depends on the dog.

Thanks for all of the replies.  I called the pharmacy in AZ (Road RUnner) and so did our vet.  They said that as long as you give the itra with food it should absorb 100%.  It will absorb less if it is given on an empty stomach.  There is a difference, if you give your dog the liquid itra, that does require an empty stomach.
