i just got told i have blastomycosis
« on: December 18, 2006, 08:05:14 PM »

They found that i have blastomycosis after i had a biopsy on my lung. I went to the doctor for back pain and she thought i had a pinched nerve so she ordered an mri well the next day she called and said they found something on my lung and needed to follow up with a cat scan. well friday she called and said we are refering you to get a lung biopsy. i asked what i had but she couldnt answer that leaving me to believe it was cancer. well this past thursday i had the biopsy and friday the pulmonary doctor called me and told me to get on this antibiotic. well i cant seem to keep my antibiotic down everytime i take it i get sick and throw up. i meet with him tomarrow to find out what i can do, but i just wanted to say i dont have any syptoms except hurting when i breathe and back shoulder blade pain.

does anyone know if i dont take my meds what will happen? will i get real sick and die? or am i just paniced? please let me know   cindy

Cindy,  from what I understand, blastomycosis in humans can take 2 forms: an isolated, often asymptomatic lung infection which causes minimal scarring in the lung (similar to with Histoplasmosis) And a serious life threatening disease causing pneumonia and all sorts of other symptoms (Gilbert's disease). You should follow the advice of a lung specialist (pulmonologist).  If you couldn't take the first antifungal they prescribed, ask for a different one.  When it spreads from the lungs, it is very serious.
I hope you are doing better.   Lisa M

Dear Cindy, Hang in there. You have to take the antibiotics. I also had blastomycosis on my lung, ten years ago. I remember well vomiting up everything that was pushed at me. I did find that if I had I.V. antibiotics then i couldnt puke them up. I just went to the local hospital a few times a day.If you have to take them by mouth try the ketoconazole. But before you take it drink something acidy. 7- up ,orange juice coke. whatever you think you can stomach. I suffered with this for almost 10 years before I was diagnosed, so dont give up the fight. I guess I was lucky my lung colapsed 5 times in several weeks and the doc decided to take out 10% and staple it closed. Thats when he found the pustules on my lung (he strangely told me he had never seen anything like it) but he burned them off saying they would problably never come back. I was lucky they didn't(they were never biopsied). you can also try gravol of sorts 1 hour before you take the antibiotic.(check with doc first on this) I found metocloripromide worked for me, I was also given demorol for the pain and then hydro morphine(time release) as tylenol, asperin, and advil, codine made me vomit and gave me no releaf. If you need to chat just email me. I hope this helps and you feel better soon. Just remember this joke: if you have to vomit aim at a nurse or doctor they seem to get the point much quicker. haha  Take care Jenjen

Cindy,

I hope you are tolerating the antifungal medication better than before.  I have Blasto myself.  I have done extensive research, and I know that these antifungal medications do work.  I am lucky to (so far) not be experiencing nadty side effects, and I am on a rather large daily dose of itraconozole (sporanox).  I have pain every day, and trouble breathing...but I dont know if these are related to the surgery or the disease.  ( I was misdiagnosed as having a lung tumor, and they removed the lower lobe of my lung before they discovered it was blasto.)  I hope you ar improving.

Hello Cindy....I too have had blastomycosis twice to be exact, you need to make sure you are taking some kind of medicine, if you don't it will and can get worse, even fatal if not treated right. I hope they found something that you can take...Read my story I posted on March 17th.....I had it 8yrs ago...

:-\ Greetings to all, I just found this website at 2am this morning.. I was diagnosed with Blasto back in March of 08. At first, they told me I had Valley Fever, then the Pulmonologist called me and said that the labs came back and found it to be Blasto. I have never had lesions of any kind. Being a full time RV'er, we were in Nevada when my symptoms began. Weakness, wt. loss, lung pain, sweating, but it took 3 Hospitals, over several states on my desperate journey to get back to Louisiana,(our homebase) where I was admitted to a Hospital, tested and diagnosed. I was prescribed Sporonox,400 mg. per day. That stuff is outrageously expensive, buy it does work. I did find a Canadian Pharmacy with legit Sporonox at one third the price you pay in US. It worked, and as of May 17, I was at a 90% cure rate with NO scarring of my lungs. During my process of this illness, my Mom died, emotionally, I am on shaky ground. Then the hurricane scares came, so we got in the RV , and headed to TN. Had to cancel my appts . and ran out of Sporonox. Suddenly, the last 2 days, I've had that familiar tugging in my left lung, soreness, wheezing, and I greatly fear the Blasto is returning. I have an appt. with Pulmo doc tomorrow. Oh, how I pray that this isn't all in my head, this disease was dreadful , and several Doctors have told me I am LUCKY to be alive, having been misdiagnosed with Pneumonia 3 times prior to coming to LA. and I suffered out the whole process before finding out  I had Blasto. I've read, searched, and become obsessed, as well as fearful and terrrified of this hidden organism in my lungs. When will , How Willl I KNOW that all Spores are DEAD, and no chance of re-occurance will strike again? I consider myself blessed to have come through this ordeal, yet fear of re-infestation lives in my brain each day.
Glad I found this site.

I can only imagine your terror, but it's likely you just stopped too soon judging by our experiences on the forum side of this site.  Once you are back on the meds the Sporonox should start to do its job and you can do the MiraVista testing to monitor effectiveness and whether or not you still have any sign of blasto in your body.  Check out the pets and animals part of this site because a lot of the info is also applicable to people I would imagine.  Good luck.
And please keep us posted, there are many good people here who will offer you ideas and emotional support.  This is definitely going to be a tough time, especially when you have just suffered such a huge loss.
