Is your girl on Itra now, or was that at first? Check her tongue for discoloration, please... right away. the mouth and the lungs really sound ominous to me... if there is blue or black or a brown cast to her tongue, or part of her tongue.....? And what color are her gums? Has sho lost muscle mass? Read my next post... as I decided to explain why I am so concerned... if there is any blue or dark change to her tongue or parts of the tongue, if she sounds rattly and night is really uncomfrtable tell your vet immediately, and about all the rest.
Thanks.
Very concerned
Barb

I have been watching your posts and they have a familiar ring, I am sorry to say, so please ask the vet about heart failure....and google the symptoms and look at Itra and heart failure, too......... the leaking protein and the mucous in her mouth and the cough..... and swelling..... well i don't know about feet, but please ask... Itra can, unfortunately, have this side effect, and you should look at the possibility, as dreadful as it is..... I am reluctant to say these things, but I wish I had known about this........
and..... if she has been off the Itra and on Fluco for longer than I think, then i am sorry for having worried you unneccessarily.........

Agree about the discoloration -- make sure she's getting oxygen.  The mucus could also be from the infection in her head....maybe pushing down through the gums??  Are there any sores in her mouth by chance?  Izzy had one in her lip that would drain on occasion.

I would ask about the heart failure - Barb is right to be better safe than sorry.  If it is, then you're decision is made for you.  As hard as that will be, at least you will know you did everything you could to get Sadie healthy again.

If it's not, I would say to go with your gut on the eye....My biggest regret with Izzy was not getting her eye removed sooner. She had two MAJOR surgeries within four days (her spay was not easy - her uterus was slightly enlarged and she was anemic), blasto, and had not eaten in two weeks...and she pulled through.  If she had not, we would have been devastated, but looking at her poor face we knew we were down to the eye removal or putting her down.  Our vet spent over an hour with us discussing the pros and cons of each decision, and gave us the freedom to make either decision without judgment.  We decided to go for it, and are thankful that we did.

I can't help but wonder if he took her eye if he would be able to drain all of that gunk from her face.  When our vet did the surgery he said that he had never seen such a foul mess pour of an incision......

There's a lot of infection in there, and remember that blasto reproduces at very high rates, which is causing all of that swelling.

She's your pup, so trust that you know the answer and are the ONLY one who knows what's best for your pup.  I know that for us, we are grateful every day that we took the chance on the enucleation.  I guess ask yourself....if you lost her during surgery, would you still feel you made the right choice, and gave it your best effort?

How much experience does your vet have with blasto? Are there any veterinary opthamologists around?  Might be worth the second opinion from an eye or blasto specialist if you have the time in the next day or two.

Do you have any medication for her eye - glaucoma drops to reduce the swelling/pain, etc?

I'm with Barb on this one.   I was thinking about it last night when I read the posts.  It sounds like Sadie Sue is in congestive heart failure.  The medications can cause that.  They really can.  It has been documented that healthy people without any previously known heart conditions can go into heart failure on antifungals.  So I can see how a dog can as well.  Please look into this right away!!  The swelling can also be caused by some liver problems.  Have you had any lab work done lately?

Praying for the best for you guys.  Please keep us posted.

I think I agree with Ashley again.  Is your vet reluctant to take out the eye?  I think it might be her only hope.  You have to trust yourself.

Let me ask you this...is it a gagging cough?  You should have it checked out but it could just be the little bit in her chest breaking up.  Lola has thick stuff in her mouth too. I related it to the BLASTO in her sinus draining.  But its hard to tell if its the same without seeing what's actually happening with Sadie.

I wanted to ask you something.....how much of a dose of Fluc is Sadie on and how much dose she weigh now?  Maybe Ashley can tell u if that right.  I only ask because (unless liquid Itra is different) it seems like you were on an awful small dose.  Lola was 42 lbs when she started and she was on 125mg.

In my experience there are not a lot of vets really experienced with Blasto.  That's the beauty of this board....EXPRIENCE.  I have had to tell my vet what I thought would be the best way to treat Lola and I've second guessed him on numerous occassions.  Sometimes you have too.

I'm really praying for you guys.  Please keep us up to date.

Just bumped an old post I found regarding itraconazole injections behind the eye....from what you've said my guess is that Sadie Sue is most definitely blind in that eye, so this wouldn't be for restoration of sight, but it might get medicine to the eye quickly if the vet is adamant that she wouldn't survive surgery....

Worth asking about!!  Wish we had seen this, we might have tried it before we took Izzy's eye, since we felt that she still had some minimal sight left!!!!!
