Passing along some info to all...
« on: November 01, 2007, 09:13:55 PM »

Back when I didn't know what the heck was going on with Pickle's eyes, I contacted a microbiologist at the U. of Wisc. and he passed along the name of a vet in Wisc. who sees lots of blasto cases, so I thought I would pass his name along to any of you who may wish to contact him.  His name is Dr.Dan Paretsky and his practice is in Eagle River, Wisconsin.  He is with Eagle River Animal Hospital.  Maybe this can help some of you with your dogs and their care.  I will continue to support all of you and your pets.

Thanks- this type of information is helpful, especially when it seems that so many vets are slow to diagnose correctly and don't seem to be much help in the treatment arena.

We were also in contact with that same doc in Eagle River and Dr. MacWilliams from UW-Madison (he has property also up in Eagle River).  Where are you from? How are your dog's eyes doing?

Our dog has blasto in both eyes and I feel that he is losing sight w/in the last few days.  He has been on Flurbiprofin and prednisolone eye drops for inflamation on the front off the eyes(now just taking the pred), and oral pred for the back.

We have a follow-up tomorrow with an optho at MI State since his sight is diminishing.  His retinal detachment has been holding steady for the past three weeks, but have noticed a sharp change in the past couple days.   Eye sight below the horizon seems to be the best part of his vision field.    The retina is very fragile membrain and any inflamation can separate it from the blood supply.  Currently the most reflective part of the retina, near the ocular nerve, is intact.

I know Jen used some oral steroids with Dirtbike when her breathing was very labored but oral steroids do suppress the immune system and can make blasto worse so just be cautious with how much you are giving orally. Marge was on three different eye drops for her blasto in her eye: prednisone, trusopft, and then and antiobiotic which I cant remember the name of. Good luck and I really hope that he retains some vision.
